What other type of bottom rigs do you all use when fishing for Reds and trout? I always use a Carolina rig when fishing with live MM or Shrimp, but when the current is strong I was wondering what everyone else uses to keep the bottom rig from moving around too much on the bottom.

My biggest trout last year ( 21") hit a dead shrimp on double hook 2oz pyramid bottom rig dead-sticked in a rod holder…and I use a Carolina rig 99% of the time inshore
Thanks for the info, I was thinking about keeping the carolina rig but using a different kind of weight. Have you ever done this?

I have actually been using a slider with clip and a pyramid sinker. Rig the same as Carolina rig but put the slider on in place of the egg sinker. The rod also rides nicer in the boat since you don’t have that weight bouncing around on your line. Once you’re at fishing spot select your sinker size, clip it on and start soaking. Easy to change up if you need more weight for current or a different type of sinker. Haddrells usually has some of the sliders in jar/bucket on the counter. Looks like this:

Thanks Downlow, I actually have some of those in my tackle box. Know I just need to pick up some pyramid sinkers.

Bank sinkers will work in that clip as well… I don’t like the slide feature on those clips sometimes so I just throw the plastic tube away. Tie in a swivel and hook and leader then just hook the clip in the swivel then it doesn’t try to slide up your line and you can permanently remove it without having to cut the main line. I use them with weights up to 8oz might can use larger weights in them I just haven’t tried it.

I catch a lot of reds (lower slot and under-slot size, generally) on a single-hook bottom rig. I use 30# line, pyramid sinker on the bottom, hook about a foot up from the sinker. Basically it’s a single hook version of the cheapo twin-hook drop-shot rigs you buy at bait shops. I just tie them by hand instead.
Normally if I am directly targeting reds and trouts, I prefer the carolina rig as mentioned above, but when I’m just putting my son on some fish (spots, croaker, pinfish, etc) I catch a lot of rat-reds on this single hook drop shot rig, esp. on cut mullet.
