Boykin for adoption

My wife reports that All 4 Paws in Pawleys island has another Boykin for adoption. It is a female puppy. They are open 11AM to 5PM tomorrow but this dog will go fast. Adoption fees including shots and spaying (mandatory) will be $200. They are located on Petigru Dr. off of Waverly Rd.

I am looking for one. I guess they are closed Friday and Saturday?

Do they have a phone yet?

No…no phone yet…no computer either…the volunteers are doing the computer work on their own computers and saving info to an SD card…they are great folks at All4Paws but not very organized. They are open until 5 today, Thursday 7/3. My wife says the pup is very sweet, a little underweight but a beautiful dog. The dog has no registration papers and spaying is part of the deal so it won;t end up in a puppy mill. We would take her except for our three yeller labs.

Get down there and get her bgf before I’m tempted to do the same. Have a 5 year old male laying here against me and my wife would probably divorce me if we had to deal with Boykin puppydum again, but dang they’re fun!

Seems like a lot of these dogs are up for adoption. Do they get dumped by their owners…? Whats the deal…?

I found that they do have a phone. I called at 9:05AM and they already had 5 applications. The dog is 2 years old. I would prefer a puppy, but would have taken her. Thanks for the heads up!

Redstripe, I think Boykins look so much like Cockers that new owners expect them to be sedate lap dogs instead of the highly energetic field dogs they are bred to be. Both Boykin’s I’ve owned were extremely intelligence, high energy, sensitive, yet stubborn to the point of being obsessive. This combo means that it takes some patience to train them and they are more likely to train you.
They need to be worked and challenged on a regular basis or they’ll come up with their own challenges. Mine liked to hide toys in inaccessible places and then spend hours trying to get them out even if it means eating through a sofa. He’s grown out of that to some extent but I recently left his Kong locked in his large plastic crate in the garage. When I noticed he wasn’t beside me, I went looking for him only to find the crate 100ft away in the backyard with a head sized hole through the plastic and “Muddy”, paws and gums bleeding, happily prancing with his Kong.
I have trouble fishing with him because after 5 years he hasn’t gotten used to the idea that I’m throwing something that he’s not supposed to retrieve. He stands on the gunnel and whines incessantly, snapping at my casts and is guaranteed to fall in the water at least once a trip. So much for “the dog that doesn’t rock the boat.”
That said, Muddy is a favorite of any kid, dog groomer, vet or kennel worker I meet. He’s a hilarious little charmer that wants nothing more than to be apart of my every adventure.
Anyone that chooses to take one into their lives should hold on tight, they’re in for a wild ride.

Great post… and spot on. I have never owned one, but have been around them for 50 years. I have always had Boxers and Bulldogs (English) and Pugs. I want a companion that can go with me in the car, boat, and maybe the office; but they may not be calm enough at the office…

I agree with everything JLeephoto said. We have a 7 month old female. Born on Dec 7 and named Pearl. We put her toys up and she went and got them and out them on her bed. We crate trained her because we don’t trust her to be unsupervised at night. She even chewed up the front door mat. My wife works from home so she is able to keep an eye on her, most of the time. She tries to retrieve the pool cleaner sweeper tail, pool thermometer, anything moving. If you use a garden hose she has to bite the water stream. I was holding one of her toys and she was ready to retrieve.

She is like a bass boat, 2 speeds, sleeping and Wide Open.

I have a 2 year old little girl named Dixie. Her parents are BSS and absolutely beautiful dogs. Bought her in Hollywood. I was expecting a hyper crazy dog with a drive. But still compassionate. She’s all that, but not hyper at all. We’ll let her out in the front yard, she’ll run and check out where all the squirrels are at then come right back. She stands right by you when you’re out somewhere, never wandering. She has a strong drive to retrieve. And she’s just as good laying on the couch, sitting middle in the truck, fishing in the boat or land. An all around beautiful dog.

My wife and I are actually looking to buy one of these dogs very soon. I have no experience with this breed but hear a lot of good things. My wife loves the size, and I like the idea of a house dog who will duck/dove hunt with me. We had two English bulldogs for 11 years, the oldest passed away in December. I had her longer than I have known my wife. She was my little girl. I think I am ready now to get another dog. Leaning toward a male. Any advice on these dogs? We have a cat, 5 year old male English bulldog, and a 5 year old son. We have a large back yard that’s fenced and are a short walk from the beach so there is space for us to excercise her regularly.

That’s a beautiful little girl you’ve got there Doug. Judging by the pic you folks have given her a happy and loving home. Good on ya man! Of all the gifts that have been bestowed upon man kind dogs have too be among the most precious.

Sounds fantastic. Just let them work. They'll chase down bugs, toads, rabbits, heck mine got a squirrel last week. As long as my dog is exercised theyre happy. I have a female, but we plan to keep a male puppy when we breed her, to use as a stud for other dogs, and get professionally trained

I say go for it, sounds like the perfect companion for you. Similar reasons why I got “Muddy.” I like the bass boat analogy of the two speeds, wide open & sleep. They do require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation but don’t get me wrong, he learns extremely fast and we haven’t had an incident of destruction in many years. It’s not that I’m a good trainer, on the contrary, but he’s very eager to please. When you’ve got a tennis ball in your hand, you could probably get him to do anything. You can see those wheels turning, “what do I have to do to get that??”
And, while he’s still “wide open” most people are amazed how controllable he is. I do long mountain hikes with him frequently off leash because he doesn’t want to be more than a 50ft from my side and he completely ignores other dogs and fellow hikers unless they call him to them.
I never did much training on hunting but he somehow figured out the game immediately. We do a family dove hunt once a year when I come home and the only problem I have is keeping him from collecting everyone else’s birds.
In terms of dealing with kids, he knocked over my niece once and ever since has acted like the perfect gentleman in her presence.

I actually think they’d be calm down and be fine around the office (at least by the time they reach adulthood.) They seem to know the difference in play time and rest time. Once I put the toys away it’s like a switch gets turned off. The only problem I’d foresee is getting used to your shadow. If I move, he’s right beside me. I’ve gotten used to it, but can see how it would be an irritation in the wrong setting.
