Boykins

I’m looking into getting a Boykin Spaniel pup sometime in the next year or so and wanted to see if anybody has had experience with them. I currently have a black and tan cocker who was a rescue and is in no way ever going to be a hunter. Most of the bird hunting I do is a few dove hunts, some ducks a couple times a year and then once a year I go up to Ohio to hunt pheasants with a friend. Really just looking for an all around good dog to be a family dog but also take to retrieve when needed. Plus the size is appealing since I will still be able to have both dogs on the boat with me while fishing. Another breed I’ve looked at are Britney spaniels but have not made up my mind yet. I really like the Boykins and the way they are built. Please let me know your thoughts if you have any experience with them.

They are awesome dogs and seem to take to retrieving naturally.

Watch out for the normal pure breed problems like hips and food allergies.

My dad has one and my brother has two. All three require grain-free food due to skin allergies. This is much more common here because of heat and humidity according to my veterinarian.

They are great around kids as long as they are around kids from the beginning. My dad’s boykin is not good with kids, but my brother’s boykins will let my daughter pull on their ears all day long.

The boykin spaniel is also the official dog of this state which makes them a little more awesome too.

You have never lived until you have been owned by a Boykin…our Boykin lived to be 17 years old. I thought they were going to have to bury my wife and me when he died.

Deek as a puppy…

Deek at 17…RIP my friend.

I have had 2 and will never have any other dog but a Boykin. My current “youngest daughter” is pretty much always at my side. They are smart as all get out and overall just great. Shoot me a PM come this winter as we are planning on breeding. May have puppies.

This is Ivy inspecting the boat rebuild. Hope the picture comes through.

I wouldn’t trade my little Boykin Dixie for the world. We’re fixing to breed her here soon as well

Best dog you will ever have. Their personalities are great as well.

" It is what it is".

Apparently my dog is part tree frog and my boat fell over. What did I do wrong? Dang technology!

After a Brittany, Boxer, two Labs and now a Boykin I have found my breed. Best dog we’ve ever had. They’ll lay on the couch with you all day or go outside and make every step you make. Great natural hunting abilities and as long as you socialize them often from day one you won’t have any problems. The Britt was the hardest headed dog I’ve ever seen and didn’t start to calm down until he was around 9 years old. Loved my labs but got tired of big dogs. Boykins are the perfect size and can retrieve everything you mentioned. My little guy even drug a Canadian goose across a small field to me even though he couldn’t pick it up. He had no doubt he could handle it.

Thanks for the responses and pictures. From all accounts I can find they seem to be amazingly smart dogs. I would be interested in some pups from down there for those who mentioned you may have litters next year. I want a pup I can work with from day one and not let mamma soften him up too much.

13 skulls, I have been wanting a boykin for a while. How much are you looking to sell the pups for? It sounds like your not yet an established breader, so could you do a discount?
