Got up late this morning, had to drag the kid out of bed. Got to the woods as it was breaking day, but still plenty dark to sneak around the field to set up. We sat for about 1.5 hours without hearing a single bird. We did see 3 coyotes cross the field about 150yds out. Kid was getting bored so we rummaged through the woods a bit then headed back to the truck. As soon as we got the truck I heard a hen cutting out in another field. We went and set up about 75yds away and made a few calls but nothing happened. The kid was ready to go home now, but I talked him into creeping out to the edge of the field to see if we could see anything besides hens. There’s a pocket in the corner of the field where these turkeys were at, we crawled up to the field edge and I saw at least one red head. We quickly moved back to the tree line and laid down in some taller grass. My son got his gun up and ready while I made a few soft purrs. Almost immediately this jake came bobbing around the corner with his head up. He came straight for us and made it about 15yds when my kid asked for the go ahead. I said shoot him, and he dropped him right there. We had to wait for a close shot as my son was only shooting his little single shot Rossi .410, 3" #6. The bird did require a little neck massage after initial knock down, but he wasn’t going anywhere.
I got on two huge birds this morning but they were henned up. I almost busted them when I came up into a field and one of the big toms was 35 yds out and I could have put a shot on him, but didn’t want to try it through the brush as he was just around the corner. I’ll get one next weekend hopefully. I probably heard 8 or 9 different birds on the roost this morning with over a hundred gobbles, but they went silent when they hit the ground.
Way to go little man. I always get a kick out of watching young hunters try to carry their prized turkey. Something he will remember the rest of his life!!! Also thanks for getting the young man in the woods. These children are going to be our future in the hunting world.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

He carried it about halfway to the truck before i had to take over, lol.
no, sir. Just a cheap little youth rossi single shot. also got the .22 barrel that goes on it. was a little worried about the kick, so i put about 12oz. of lead in the butt and put a cheap slip-on recoil pad on it. it still kicks a bit, but it's much better than before.

Cool, He’ll never feel the recoil when taking a bird! Maybe while target practicing, but not while taking care of business!
