braid tangling!

The big rods we had were spooled with braid with flouro/ light wire leaders. A couple are bait cast few others spinners in 60 and 70 sized.

I fish with braid 99% of the time, have been doing so for 15+ years. Mono feels like a rubberband to me at this point… Only my trolling gear has mono on the spools. Braid is on my crappie rods all the way up to my 6000’s & TLD’s.

I like lighter tackle and heavy drag - I like to “put the wood” to the fish, my reels are spooled with heavy # test braid and I rarley have a breakoff. Add the sensitivity and durability - its braid for me.

Yes, the egg sinker will tangle from time to time on a Carolina rig, maybe 5% of the time or less… not enough for me to quit using braid. It typically takes me about 30 seconds to untangle the sinker. We never have issues with chicken rigs or similar setups.

Angling rhymes with tangling.

Yeah bottom fishin’ okay 30lb test 1/2 oz. sinker. Serious? maybe. We fished this past weekend inshore and the jetties, big rods were rigged 60-80lb test with 2-3 oz sinkers on the bottom, more serious? And braid WILL cut faster on rocks than mono. Fact. Not hatin’ just sayin’. Try the knife blade test. Fold a piece of equal test of braid and mono on a knife blade a pull across, the braid will cut almost instantly. But As far as tangles mono wil be alot nicer.

Did you read his post? It clearly says "I was recently doing some bottom fishing".

But you are right, a 1/2 oz sinker is pretty light. 30lb test is not too light. Mark Brown specializes in light tackle grouper fishing. He has an arsenal of penn spinning outfits loaded up with 20lb test used to catch gag groupers and red snapper.

Anyway, regardless. Back to your original question about braid. Most serious bottom fishermen that do it week in and week out use braid. I’ve got two diawa saltist reels that we have spooled up with 60lb braid and they work well for bottom fishing.

Thank you skinnee, I get it now.

Happy Fishing.

Ditto to what Skinnee says about the extra leader. Also, makes it easy to change rigs on the same rod during the day. I usually start with about 6 feet of leader and end it with about 2 - 3 for changing from long leader live bait, chicken rigs, jigs, etc. Above the leader my main line is 50 pound Santiago depth braid (a tip given to all of us by Sellsfish). Braid is the way to go bottom fishing.

" increase casting distance" I read that a lot. Why is it that if you’re on the bank you try casting to China, and if you’re in a boat you cast to the bank? Try fishing in between, you’ll be surprised what you’ll find. In saltwater inshore/surf, I fish mono 100% with no issues. And mostly 15lb.-20lb. test.

Well it’s not like every situation is where I’m trying to cast to China or cast to the bank. Fish roll the water on me just outside of casting distance frequently enough. You don’t have to put as much effort into casting normal casts, and thus you really do get better accuracy when fishing the weedline.
