braid tangling!

I was recently doing some bottom fishing using carolina rigs. 30 lb. braid (can’t recall the brand) with a 1/2 oz. sinker, a bead, then a barrel swivel. I had about 16 inches of 30 lb. flouro leader. I spent more time unscrambling tangles from that braid than I did fishing! Does anyone have any recommendations for how to lessen the problem? I guess don’t use braid is one way to go. The two rods that had just mono/flouro on them never did get tangled. Thanks.

Are you manually closing the bail? If not, this often solves the problem.

Tangling where? at the end by the leader or up around the reel?

I take it you mean tangling at the leader? Do you recall if you were consistently fishing the braid setup into the tide or current? I have found that sometimes when i fish “into” a tide the leader doubles back on my standing line while the weight does not move as much. Then it slowly gets moved with the current and twists itself into a tangle. The braid, being so soft, does not unwrap itself while you are reeling it back in. Mono on the other hand has enough stiffness to it to usually unwrap itself on the reel in.

I fish a similar setup on the bottom inshore, except a little lighter on the leader, usually 15lb fluoro. I see this some, but not as much as you were apparently. Good luck.

Rub a little bit of Chapstick on a wind knot. It really helps to untangle a braid knot.

Sounds like you are letting the sinker slide up and down the braid. What you really want to do is add in another several feet of leader via albright and let the sinker slide up and down the mono.

^^^ this.

Yes skinneej, the sinker was sliding on the braid. That’s a great idea. Never occurred to me to try an extra leader. Thanks!

It will fix your issue. I generally tie in about 4 feet or so above the swivel.

Or if you must cast upstream, pin the egg sinker to the swivel with a small split shot. But generally if you let the line out behind the boat so your sinker doesn’t slide, it wont ever tangle.

I see no need to use braid unless your catching large fish on smaller reels.

I agree with in the grass, skip the braid unless you are pullin’ big grouper off of structure in 100+ feet of water. I am still puzzled why everyone is trying to use braid for every thing. Don’t take me wrong, braid has its place. But to me braid has more cons than pros, in salt water that is. My opinion.

Throw away those spinning reels and get a bait caster!!!

Or just stick with mono.

I go back and forth between mono and braid, but I always end up preferring the braid. The increased casting distance and sensitivity are hard to turn down. I also get a confident 18 months out of the line before I change it. I could probably go much longer than that since I fish usually two to four days each month. With mono, I fear going more than 9 months, even with quality line like Trilene, Momoi, or Sufix Elite.

I actually spooled a reel today with braid. It’s a 7000 reel I use for Cobia & Tarpon. I needed a lot of line but with a higher pound test. Plus I don’t cast this all day like one would for trout or red fish, so tangles shouldn’t be such a problem. I left mono on my other reel just incase this braid gives me headaches.

" increase casting distance" I read that a lot. Why is it that if you’re on the bank you try casting to China, and if you’re in a boat you cast to the bank? Try fishing in between, you’ll be surprised what you’ll find. In saltwater inshore/surf, I fish mono 100% with no issues. And mostly 15lb.-20lb. test.

He did say he was bottom fishing. Most serious bottom fishermen prefer braid. It doesn't nick as easily as mono, more resistant to rocks, not as much stretch. Seems to last longer too.

Yeah bottom fishin’ okay 30lb test 1/2 oz. sinker. Serious? maybe. We fished this past weekend inshore and the jetties, big rods were rigged 60-80lb test with 2-3 oz sinkers on the bottom, more serious? And braid WILL cut faster on rocks than mono. Fact. Not hatin’ just sayin’. Try the knife blade test. Fold a piece of equal test of braid and mono on a knife blade a pull across, the braid will cut almost instantly. But As far as tangles mono wil be alot nicer.

What kind of reels was the 60-80lb test on? Not many spinning reels will hold much of that.
