I have been wanting to re-spool some of my trolling gear, and I think I want to go with a braid/superline backing and roughly 100yds of mono top shot. Have any of you had experience with rigging this way? My goal is line capacity, not strength. I’d like to hear some thoughts on types/brands/sizes of line for backing. I would prefer not to use a dyed line like powerpro because of the mess it makes when wet.
It’s my plan to use an albright for the connection, but I’m not opposed to the wind-on connection if it is preferred. I live in Beaufort, but was thinking of coming up to Charleston to have my reels spooled. I’ve never been to either, so can anyone tell me if Atlantic Game and Tackle or Haddrell’s is better equipped for this rigging?
Reels are 30 and 50 class. I’ve been thinking I could switch out the mono size depending on targeted species. Is this a flawed assumption?
BigTuna, for what it’s worth, the assumption of using braid instead of mono is yours,if you are using conventional reels 30’s and 50’s I personally do not see any reason to use braid;Reason: is unless you are fishing for blue-fins or deep-dropping for swordfish in over 1500 ft I do not think there are too many fish that can’t be chased down or caught with what you are using now(Mono)I assume. I have a limited budget but do have custom tackle and do all my own re-spooling; the cost of braid versus mono for me anyway is is a big deal but i do use it on my spinning and casting outfits for the “distance”, but if you do a wind-on think about using a “Yucatan or Bristol” instead of a albright, just some food for thought;I’m just saying
silky- The deep drop was the whole reason I started thinking about this setup. It’s either buy more reels or figure out a good way to switch back and forth on the tackle I own. Since you do your own spooling, have you found a good way to measure your line going on? I google’d line counters, and all I came up with is the very inexpensive handheld things. Do those work well? Thanks for pointing me to the other knots.
I can’t help with the line counter issue but if you are going to use the reel for deep dropping, Swordfish?? I would look at a separate set-up specifically for that as the cost of the braid is high?? talk to the for mentioned as there local, I do know that they are using Diamond Braid for dropping on swords in FL. And most who can’t afford Lingren-Pitmans are using a product called the Reel-Cranky for retrieval on conventional s ,Personally if I was going deep dropping I would set-up a rod and reel just for that purpose, but that’s me.It takes a lot of braid to fill a 50-80 wide$$$$$
