Braid

I need to respool 2 squall 60LD and 2 Penn 7000/8000 spinning reels. I bought a 2000 yard spool of highly reviewed but lower cost 80lb braid. It’s yellow and flakes yellow when spooling and while fishing it. I’ve lost 4+ big fish the last few trips and I’m over it. Someone point me in a tried and true direction. I had them spooled with 30lb momoi diamond mono that caught plenty of fish just want some more strength. Plus I bottom fish my spinning feels and need something stronger for bottom fishing. I’m going to top it with 100+ yards of mono on the trolling gear for the initial strike. THANKS!!

I’ve got a few of mine spooled up with 65 lb depth hunter braid. So far, I like it. My application is a bit different as it is only on my bottom rods. I do have them rigged with 15 ft or so 100 lb flouro leader though. It’s seems pretty strong. While on vacation in Florida this summer kids and I used them for frolling artificals. Hooked a really big tarpon. Line held, hooks straitened. I’d give it a look.

I think the 30 lb mono would be fine. Its spinning tackle you dont need more strength it will leed to pulled or bent hooks or possibly broke rods. Thats why we have drag.

Power Pro has done well for me Mike, a bit pricey buying 2,000 yards at a time. Most of my equipment is mono. If you get tangles bottom fishing with the braid it is can be a royal pain to untangle.

Power Pro braid on just about everything. 30# on my 6000/7000 spinners, 50# braid topshots on my bottom rigs. Smaller reels, more line capacity & better feel. I hate mono & only use it for trolling/chunking.

Why not try a few hundred yards initially, to find one you like. For trolling, I would go straight mono, I don’t see any advantage to braid there other than capacity.

I fish braid on nearly everything and power pro is the #1 option for just overall price and performance. If you search hard and aren’t dead set on weight or color you can find good deals on it occasionally, I got 3000 yds of 150 hi vis white for 165, I saw it for sale at 153, the next day 158, and that afternoon 165, so I bought it from power pros amazon account and the next day it went back up to 437, so pp does do the occasional deal and mine is the new 2016 fiber kind. I like it a lot but it has less of a coating then the old kind but to me it is softer and easier to work with. Also contact a few of the smaller high end braid companies and they will often do deals with users who do a lot of social posting. A buddy of mine has recently received a few braid products and offers because of his shark fishing Instagram. You wouldn’t need a 100yd top shot, you could have clip on shock leaders or wind on leaders, I tied my shock leader my self and it holds up fine and winds on, 150lb braid to 300lb mono. With braid you want to use a little less initial drag for the strike and a softer rod to have some give because the braid doesn’t. For hi- speed trolling its common to have a 25-50ft shock leader that has snap swivels crimped to each end to attach to main line and to lure, it also helps with line twist and improves lures tracking. The braid comes in handy when your way back line is 500yds out, you still have 500yds to get dumped by a big run.

I use 80 and 100lb green moss power pro. Never let me down.

This isn’t directed at anyone in particular. I don’t understand paying the money we pay for boats, reels, rods, fuel only to buy cheap line and hooks. I see it a lot. Boggles my mind. Its probably the most important fishing tool we use. You don’t need a boat, rod, reel, or a hook even. You do need line. I can make everything else if I had to. Power pro,

Power pro is what I see in reviews too. I don’t like the light strength of 30lb mono when trolling. I want it for capacity. If I run 50+ lb mono I’ll have no capacity. Spinning gear heavy line is for grouper etc. strength to get them up fast off the bottom. I know I can baby a fish on the 30lb mono but really not trying to fight 20lb fish for 30 minutes.

Power Pro is great for bottom fishing tangles stink.I like mono trolling we fish all tld 25s with 30lb mono never been spooled have thought fish for a couple of hours.I thought thats why we go is for the fight if it was all about just getting something to eat instead of buying 450 gallons of fuel every trip we could just go to the market.

If all you’re looking for is capacity you could always back the mono with braid. Just remember it’s amazing how much drag just the line moving through the water puts on the line. Also as the spool gets smaller the drag pressure increases. I’ve never been spooled on 30 lb tackle. I’d say unless your billfishing and there have been plenty of Blue Marlin caught on TLD 25’s with 30 lb mono I wouldn’t much worry about it. The only reason I see to use braid trolling is if you were pulling plugs or something and wanted extra depth.

To answer your original question I found power pro to be inconsistent and expensive. I did some searching on thehulltruth.com and found Suffix 832. I switched and haven’t had any problems since.

I put 200yds of 30# braid on my Squall 50s then topshot them with 30# or was it 40#? Either way, I think I ended up with 550ydsof total line. I’ve already caught a bunch of stuff on them including a few wahoos in the 40# range. I’ve yet to come close to that braid backing. But, I can go way, way , way back and not worry about it and/or I have a chance with a marlin or bigger fish.

I think that most problems people experence with braid is there knots

First check all the eyes on your rods, and then test your knots. Use a cotton ball and move it around the inside of every eye,if it snags replace the eye. Because you have chipped glass. I stopped wasting money on PowerPro about four years ago. I’ve been buying dynema braid off of eBay for a third of the price. We use 150 pound braid on our high-speed wahoo Riggs, with a 200 pound top shot and I’ve had zero failures. For grouper and other bottom fish we use 65 pounds and 80 pound and again no issues. I promise you I catch more big fish in one season than most people on this site. It’s not the braid that is failing, it is something else either your knots for your tackle.

LOL

i have always had issues with 50# PP, not so much with 65 or 80 or even the lighter stuff which i like for diameter and sensitivity but frankly 20 or 30PP is way overkill on most of my inshore set ups, thats just the right corresponding mono diameter.
Anyway, I have one 30 class trolling setup spooled with 80 or 100 momoi diamond blue hollow core that is awesome. super strong and great feel,
i have some of that newer spiderwire stealth braid on a couple bottom fishing/surf rods and like that as well.
Jerry brown is the nicest stuff to used in 80 or 100 but it costs a fortune.
West coast guys swear by Izor and Tuff line. they are most all really strong, personal preference makes the most difference like all the other tackle out there. Like sells said double triple check your connections and you will rarely have a braid failure that wasnt related to chipped guides or twists or other thinks

I use and have used for a while now, the PP. I have it on my boat rods and several spinners to include inshore rods. I understand the need to balance strength, capacity, and value (trust me), so I have started using PP with a top shot of quality, but heavier, mono. The importance of good knots with braid cannot be understated. (Ok, all lines, but braid can be a real B if not tied right).
