After the maulings of Wednesday we were fired up to go chase the mauis out in the deep. Ran to the south but never found anything that looked good, ended up fishing in the high 200s and found a little current and scattered grass in 500’. Had a mavericko on early and just after I passed the rod down a white came in hot dorsal high on the long rigger. I had just cracked a refreshment when the white came charging in, so mid chug I tried to call out, “marlin right long,” but instead I showered the cockpit with green tea. It was a chaotic and hilarious site. As soon as he was hooked, he charged directly across the spread and crossed just about all the lines. Lots of chaos, but Sarah did a great job on the rod and we cleared all the lines. The fish put on a good show and we snapped some good photos at the boat. Joe got to wire his first billfish. He looked like a pro. Proceeded to fill the transom box with mauis in 350-500’, didn’t get an exact count. Probably just under 30. Pulled off another white or little blue that came in hot on the squid chain. We were able to switch him off, but he must have dog boned the bait and let go after a 10 second run. Also caught a wahoo at the end of the day.
Oh yeah, Sarah in addition to catching her first marlin, also gaffed her first fish. She beat off the first one, but after a little more coaching, she stuck the second one on the first shot.

Cracker, what happens btwn you and Craig should stay btwn you and Craig.
Fritzy, if you would like to see a sail, I’ve got an albino mount back at the house. Stop by so you can work on your fish ID for that book you are writting. And let me know about the carolina black gold run. I ran into a school of their cousins the spinners out in 500’ on this trip. I would have tried to capture one, but I knew they were too wily for us mahi fisherman.
