BRAINSTORM 5/25, 28, 30

Fished Memorial day with the kids. Had a great time and the youngsters angled a dozen mauis. I spent a lot of the day in the pit. A couple of 30lb fish. Lost the daymaker with a jump on the leader. Hook slingshots back and I ducked leaving Betsy in the line of fire. I was worried for a moment, but luckily the hook hit her camera and wasn’t much more than a flesh wound.

Fished Georgetown with a motley crew of tank top jimmy, capt jack spar-rowe, thizzle, the docta, tucker, lightning luke, johnny j, and desbra. we had some fun. thursday fished in the 100s from 350 out to the deep. we were attacked by the mauis on the plugs. foul hooked several. ended the day with 12 in the box and several awendaw releases. some would call that a box full, but there was plenty of wiggle room in that statement. late in the day we had our daymaker moment. moved out toward the deep and found some nice looking water out there. some would say we were fishing the hairy tittie. right around the nipple, we saw a hole in the water where the plunger used to be, and few misses and we finally came tight. after a good run and some quick maneuvering we were all shocked to see a wonder of nature. had a wahoo eat a blue marlin. not many get to see this rare sight but i’m told i’m not alone.

Saturday we fished around the triple zeros. lots of flyers and lots of mauis. we were able to keep most of them off the plugs. best case scenario. had fun watching them attack but didn’t snag them. caught a 30lb maui. lots of fun at the tournament. the marlin eating wahoo weighed 69.9lbs. congrats to the el tejano and the daymaker.

What is the “shady aggregate calcutta”?

Maybe you should contact JenkinsW@dnr.sc.gov or DukesA@dnr.sc.gov about this “shady aggregate calcutta” I am sure they would want to know about!

I’ll bet they understand how a three fish aggregate works.

update on the aggregate calcutta… the owner of gtown marina called me yesterday to apologize for the handling of the matter. he was very professional and i was impressed by his handling of the situation. he said that it was unfortunate that the situation had transpired without his knowledge and that he has fished tournaments his entire life, and that there is no question of what constitutes winning an aggregate. he called many captains that fish the gov cup and other tournaments, they all confirmed this to be true, and he then mailed the remainder of the aggregate winnings to me.

congrats…

What ended up being the ruling? As I understand it the issue was whether or not you had to have all three species? They are good folks at the GLM.

This isn’t rocket science. Who has ever heard of an aggregate that says you MUST weigh in all three species? There should have never even been a discussion about this. Sounds like a bunch of sore losers to me!!! Any idiot can see that!

I guess it depends on what the rules said and how the same tournament paid that particular Calcutta in years past.

I couldn't find the word "idoit" in the same dictionary. A little help please???

So which has a higher aggregate weight?

2 lbs + 2 lbs + 2 lbs = 6 lbs
OR
10 lbs + 10 lbs = 20 lbs

Please help me with the math. I’m struggling a little here.

I need that lucky gaff back… seems to be doing the trick.

Nice wahoo. Did you really took girls offshore?

the only thing shady about the aggregate calcutta at the Georgetown Blue Marlin tournament is that a group of fisherman on the Christy II tried to manipulate the rules. By your responses, demeneanor, and lack of knowledge about the rules aggregate tournaments in South Carolina, i would assume that you were one of the fisherman on that boat.

Not surprisingly, immediately after the tournament, I was contacted by six separate individuals that informed me of the charachter of those fishing on the Christy II, their lack of fishing etiquette, and their previous attempts to manipulate rules of other fishing tournaments.

I hope that you are proud of yourself.

The folks that own, run and work at that marina are good people. They have been holding that tournament for longer than there has been a Governor’s Cup series and they do a good job.

Topics like this tend to get alot of people curious - look at the number of people that have read this one. You hear all types of stories within the fishing community and this issue has been no exception. Since it was posted on here it gave folks an opportunity to ask some questions with someone who was directly involved.

Good going Daniel. What I like about this is a smaller boat can play with the big boys and walk away with a nice bit of change.
Sounds like some of those who fished need to have a courtesy and ethics check…
