In the midst of all the activity, didn’t get around to post a report. The big news for the tournament was the weather and the sailfish. Rascal crushed them the first day (9), and Cerveza both days (5 and 6). Had a great time listening to all the “Sailfish, right now” calls on the radio. Both days were sporty, particularly Friday morning. It was a bit over 6 feet for a while. Started Thursday morning looking for the tunas and found 5 in thirty minutes. Unfortunately pulled the hook on a bigger one and got the other big one eaten by a shark. Caught 3 small blackfins and about 5 bonitas, but a couple others caught bigger small ones. Also caught a few mauis. We pulled big plasctics both days looking for a kill fish. Had one shot out in the deep on Thursday mid day. Then Thursday afternoon at 2:35 we found some lively water. National geographic all the way. Blue marlins, sailfish, oceanic whitetips, and others were enjoying the fun. Had two good blue marlin bites on the first pass, but neither found the hook. Saw two blue marlin cutters and and two free jumpers, as well as a couple of sails. Next couple of passes we twice had two small blue marlins (together) charge up behind the lure only to fade off. I had a great time yelling, “blue marlin, left long, now 2 coming together” twice in ten minutes. Hard to know how many of the fish we saw were the same fish… so at least 3, but as many as 6 different fish behind the baits, and several others cutting and jumping. Quite a day.
Friday we headed back to the same spot, but never found the action. The high seas made trolling to the south difficult in the morning. Pulled big lures all day and had a few mystery bites. Tuna fished in the afternoon for 20 minutes and caught 2 small blackfins and a maui. Seems like the tuna fishing is on if you want to catch smaller fish. Did hear of one small yellowfin caught on Friday.
