So long story short i acquired this brass boat prop, which seams is for a outboard, and it got my curiosity going, whats the deal with it. why brass, it seams heavy. and another question what the hell do i do with it scrap it? sell it? trash it? do people even think about brass any more on a outboard? also there’s some numbers down the side of it is that the model number or what i get the last number is the pitch but whats the rest of it.
says Quick Sliver 48-32748-A3-19

Noob; I don’t know what you have there but I sure as hell wouldn’t scrap it. You might have something worth money as a collectable. The 48 on the model number might be the year? Looks like it may be an old Merc prop! http://forums.iboats.com/Boat-Propellers/Quicksilver
sweet thanks easy, found another one on ebay same prop i think, has the same numbers on the inside of mine. still it just got me more curious about this thing tho. wonder what the heck it came off of. and still why brass its so heavy.
Noob, it isn’t brass, it’s bronze. The Quick Silver 48-32748-A3-19 is a good Mercury part number. It a 13X19, made to fit Mercury inline 6 cylinder OBs from 1962 to 1987. Reference http://www.pfs-ware.com/WhitePapers/pdf/MercProp.pdf
In the 1960s, stainless steel was much more difficult to machine than bronze, so stainless wasn’t an option back then. Most of the high performance and racing props were made of bronze. Those in-line 6 Mercurys were called “Towers of Power” and were very popular racing engines. Still are actually.

Thanks for the info Larry! pretty cool in my book just to know this stuff. does weight matter when it comes to the props? is this something that can be used still? and as far as the prop it self got any recommendations on what to do with it? Sell it or is it more of a boating novelty now that stainless is around?

better question i just pulled my prop off on my 100 hp Yamaha also 13x19 prop on, and this one fits just like the current aluminium prop. can i use it? or will it make a difference with the weight of the prop its like 20 pounds heavier at least. but fits like a glove.

hahaha dont think the wife would let that fly she would make me put it in the shop lol, I plan on doing some polishing to it, but thought it would add some character to the boat kinda of a neat look.

I grew up on Mobile Bay and my dad and his friends used those style props when running across mud flats while duck hunting. Of course we didn’t have to worry about oyster beds where we were.
Shine it up and hang it on the wall of your Man Cave. Good conservation piece. Make and ash tray or candy dish out of it:question: You could expound on your natical knowledge:smiley:

Yes, it will probably perform better than a stock aluminum.

The bronze prop is comparable in weight to stainless. It is made from a silicon bronze alloy. The weight averages…
Bronze (8-14% Sn) 7400 - 8900 (kg/m3)
Stainless Steel 7480 - 8000 (kg/m3)
I would not hesitate to try it if it fits your engine. It was better than aluminum in 1962 and it still is today. Nothing wrong with a bronze prop. Today stainless is cheaper to build. Back then bronze was.

Might give it some character too You might want to take it to a prop shop, get a new hub pressed in and check the blade balance. Other than that, run it.
