Breach Inlet/Hamlin Creek 4/23

Fished the incoming tide this afternoon and caught a few small fish with the wife and dog today (whiting, trout, flounder, stingray) all on a mud minnow and Carolina rig. A nice afternoon on the water until - I reared back to cast and put the hook right into my poor pup’s ear! The hook was past the barb and embedded in the heavy cartilage of her ear. Dog freaks, wife freaks, I freak. I lay the rod down and cut the leader to start to work on her. Finally, after a few minutes I’m able to pull out the hook - I considered trying to push it through but finally just pulled it out. Everything starts to calm down and my dog doesn’t seem to be in too bad of shape. I look up and say “where’s the rod?” Wherever I layed it down it must have been in a precarious spot - I can only assume that when I cut the line it went over. My nearly new (6 month old) Penn Battle in the drink! The current was really ripping through so there was no chance to try and recover it. Overall, I am very thankful that the only casualty was a rod and reel and feel fortunate that my little buddy doesn’t seem too worse for wear.

That aside, I have been reading and learning from this site and its users for a few years now and want to express my thanks for all the tips and information it and you have supplied. Most of my days are much better than today!

Some days you’re the hammer, some days you’re the nail. At least everyone is okay. Yes, I’m getting more philosophical as I get older.

Don’t say a word Pea.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

Ouch!!! Pulling out the hook probably hurt you almost as much as your dog!

Glad everyone on is good. I had the same thing happen to my dog except she bit the lure. I had to push it through her cheek and cut the barb.

You should have put a nice little diamond stud or maybe a pirate hoop since it was already pierced. That would be a first, never seen a dog with an ear ring. Just sayin!!!

Dear Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the size of the fish I catch, the Courage not to lie about it, and the Wisdom to know that none of my fishing buddies would believe me anyway…

tip for you here, use Ice to numb the area before pushing pulling

Local Boy, Just having fun.

Sounds like one of my day’s. Reared back to launch a brand new 11ft rod into the surf and snap. Broke the rod and gut hooked my lab who snuck up behind me in the dark. Had to cut out the hook, barely snagged her. Welcome to CF. You will get um next time.

Similar thing happened to my uncle…except my dad caught my uncles eyelid when they were fishing as kids.

Had a kid get a hook in the side of his eye lid and he needed to go to the Emergency room, when he was there they had to do a skin graft and took the skin from his ***** area. Kid made a full recovery, he’s just gonna be a little cock eyed the rest of his life…

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

I put thus up in fishing reports, did this last week.
Now have better bolt cutters and bourbon on board for any future incidents!

Crimp all hooks.
