What change a week can make. Seventy at the dock in Miami last weekend, twenty five in Belle Isle this Saturday. Meet Jay, Vaughn and Stephan from the Crazy Love for a trip to get a few BSB before they shut them down. The boat was covered with ice and the Marina frozen over between the docks. We loaded the BlueWater Machine with more food and tackle than we could possibly use. Headed out just after eight and was breaking ice like a Coast Guard Cutter in the marina. The sun was shining bright and we cruised out at 30 knots to some live bottom in 100 ft of water. Took all of five minutes to locate the fish and it was game on. The large BSB were chewing on anything you put in front of them. We were grading out all the 16 inch plus fish you would normally want. We were using only manual reels to help us release healthy fish that had time to exhale on the way up. Moved around several times just to keep it interesting nice BSB everywhere we fished. Its hard for most people to realize that you can leave the dock covered with ice and fish in short sleeve shirts. It was a great day on the water with people who love to fish. We ended the day with 60 large BSB that averaged nearly 3 pounds. The water was like a lake by the end of the day we ran back to the dock at 45 knots. I hope we get another shot at them this weekend.
Some of the BSB from today

Hard to believe you can catch so many of those endangered BSB
Congrats on a nice haul.
Unfortunatley pics like that are not good for the cause.

Along with the twelve cobia he caught the day before I dont think he’s going to starve.
Where did you guys learn to read or count? I clearly wrote four of us had a great day catching four limits (60) fish total. Most of the crew had not fished for BSB in months. I had not fished in SC for several weeks. Every fish was well cared for and will be used for a special club dinner.

Always Flatcalm. We welcome anyone who loves fishing. Let’s attack issues that matter like the ones being discussed at the SAFMC hearing on the 26th. I will be there.

This is where I have to disagree with you. This picture shows the true state of the fishery! It is strong, sustainable, and the limits that are in place work! Look at the size of these fish! We fished yesterday, and also took a 4 person limit on a public number at an artificial reef! All of our fish were 16" or larger, with some topping 21" and 5 lbs! We never measured a fish all day, and drifted the area for an hour. Ask any diver about BSB’s, and they will tell you the truth, the fish are thick. I have never seen the size we are seeing this year. We may have won a battle by going to DC, but the war is far from over. If you care at all about your rights to fish, then be at the SAFMC meeting on the 26th, and let David Cupka and his band of Eco-idiots know that we are done with the B.S. So take a look at that picture again, and see what a HEALTHY fishery looks like. There are no commercial boats fishing for BSB’s in the S/A until June and the weather along with fuel prices will control the amount that local anglers will take. Incidentally. all of the large BSB’s are male, of the 50 I filleted today, everything over 2 lbs was a male!

I have deleted my earlier posts because they were not accurate and are quite frankly what Uncle KC calls them: Foolish statements. They were made out of a reaction for the passion of fishing that we all enjoy so much and don’t want to lose. As usual reactionary comments are typically not thought out very well. Uncle KC, I have sent you a personal email offering my apology, if you did not get it, please accept my apology here on the forum.
Swamp Beaver thank you for your e-mail it exemplified real class. I accept your apology and offer my own. There are too many forces working to end our fishing rights to waste time and energy fighting each other.

I been fishing here for 50 yrs. For the last 4 to 6 years we have been keeping 19 to 23 inch BS fish and nothing smaller, B-linners are the same. The fishing has not been better in my life time. I have no problem going out anytime and catching a limit of whatever we target, FISHING HERE IS GREAT
Local Boy, Just having fun.
Sorry, I was just being sarcastic. Obviously if you can catch numbers of fish with that size the population is in great shape. Seems crazy to shut them down.
