i gotta question for you guys.i have a 5hp briggs and stratton motor.i wanna know will salt water mess it up.i know its a air cooled motor so it will not suck water up in it.i wanted to do some river fishing up in charleston.
Briggs as a ‘boat-motor’? Interesting.
It should be OK as long as ya don’t dunk it under!
As long as you keep it washed when you return it should be fine. Duck hunters use the Mud-buddy style engines that have Briggs for power. They hunt saltwater also, and the ones that I see that I know go to salt look pretty good.
thanks you guys.my 35 hp is in the shop and i plan on using my 5hp briggs for fishing rivers and probably shrimping this year.
20 years ago I mounted a 11hp B/S engine on a Mercury 20 hp foot…worked great… electric start, charging system. Had it on a 14 jon boat in saltwater. Heavy as hell but reliable…got some funny looks though. Will need to increase prop pitch…B/S max rpm is about 3600 rpm’s but alot of torque.

Don’t do it. I had one of those on a jon boat, my friends thought it would be a good idea to bait shrimp one year. I thought no problem, I was wrong, everything on it rusted like crazy. A strong little motor, but being air cooled, they overheat easy.
Now you know that the SALT will mess it up, if you don’t do your part to stop it G’fishing, don’t you? Do your best to clean the li’l feller after each trip into the Saltwater, and he should be OK. Seeya, Scott
PS. I do need my net back…I’ve bought two more recently, and I only throw them into a jagged mess!!! Be in touch my friend!!!

Rinse all you want, nothing is gonna stop saltwater from eating up that cast block or the thin sheet metal flywheel guard.
I believe there is a sticker on those engines that says “do not use in saltwater”
probably last a while but it will fall apart after a while…use it, then buy another, you’ll get your moneys worth out of it
