Broken Flywheel Magnets

Noticed that I have a loose and broken flywheel magnet on my Merc 125. I know I need to pull the flywheel off, but then what? Can a new Magnet be glued or epoxied in? Any of you had this happen? This kinda would explain some of my ignition system issues at mid to high rpms. Just looking for some advise and trying to keep costs to minimum if possible. Hopefully it could be repaired and no damage done to the stator. Going to pull the flywheel off this weekend. Thanks, Big Red.

seen it happen many times.
get some 5 minute epoxy.
clean up the mating surface of the magnet and flywheel.
epoxy it back in place.
don’t put any epoxy in the crack between the 2 pieces of the magnet.
you may lose a small amount of your charging ability, but the motor should run just fine.

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

what Mr. Chris said.

Before putting on epoxy get some emery cloth and shine it up good using some lacquer thinner or other good solvent to clean. Wouldn’t hurt if you have a dremel tool to put some X patterns for the epoxy to adhere to.

Have seen this happen on several Air cooled engines.

Thanks for the info Guys. Will work on it this weekend.

This is what I got. Some of the magmet is missing. What do yall think? Go ahead and expoy it back? Trigger and stator look ok.

Chris is the Marine expert on here. If it were mine I’d be looking for a flywheel. I wouldn’t trust that magnet. Maybe find one on ebay? With my luck that magnet would finish coming apart and take out the stator and trigger assy. You used to be able to buy a magnet kit, but I think it would be as cost effective to just find a complete flywheel.

If you do remove the magnet make sure you mark it as they are polarized.

Just got one from Ebay. To much missing for me to epoxy it back in place.
