broken hydroglow

So my hydroglow light stopped working the night of the lake world tournament. It was bought in June 2010, so it was about a month out of warranty. I sent them an email and never got a response. So I called yesterday and they said they discontinued the fluorescent lights but they would give me a new LED light for $150. They are selling them online for $169 on some sites. I don’t really have the extra $150 laying around. He said I could send it to him and if they could fix it for less they would. Might have to crack it open and see what I can do.

Wow that sucks. I just picked up what I believe is an older flourescent light. I was thinking that they could service them if anything happens. After hearing this, my next light will be an Alumiglo. Screw any company that refuses to service a 2 year old product. Not for free of course, but they should still sell bulbs, it is a light after all, and bulbs need replacing.

He did say to send it to him and if they could fix it for less than 150 they would. It carries a 2 year warranty, mine is up by about a month. I think the bulb just came out of the socket or something. Problem is there is no easy way to get in there to fix anything. Basically have to cut through the pvc and hope I don’t break anything. I don’t think there is any way to separate pvc once it’s cemented together.

I ended up cutting open the light myself and the bulb was burnt out. Tried to buy the bulb online but to get them you have to order a box of 30. Called hydroglow today and they are going to send me a new bulb for $30 plus the cost of shipping. So I can’t complain about that. Also, the LED light they were going to give me for $150 retails for $260ish, the $169 one is only 2’

You ever attach any weight to the bottom to get it to sink down? I’m wondering what the best way is to attach enough weight to get it down the length of the power cord.

I had a friend out with me that brought along his LED HydroGlow and it doesn’t have the built in flotation like the one we have.

Do they work better if they are submerged instead of floating?

Not sure how much weight you would need or even a good way to secure it to the light. I guess if you got the light down to the thermocline you would attract more bait. But you would probably tangle lines on it more. Even with the light on the surface bait still will stack up 30’ down. I might add more weight to mine while I have it open.

Tom i deliver to a sign place over off shop rd everyday. I have been meaning to ask them if they can get green bulbs in. it is a normal 110 bulb right?, with a built in ballast right? or do i have it all wrong and you need a 12v green bulb?

It’s a standard 30Watt T12 Bulb. Only thing is a 30wt12 bulb in green isn’t so standard. Here are some pics of the inside for those who might be interested. I know I always wondered what was going on inside the tube.

Well, it’s good to know that everything inside was made in the USA. Personally I would have been ok with some German or Japanese engineering in this light for the money, but it’s good to know that they are not using Chinese junk and selling it at a premium. Hats off to them.

I actually bought everything to make one before I bought this one. But my bulb is a 48" 36W T8 and my ballast is designed to run two 18W bulbs. Thought I could combine the wires to make it fire one 36w bulb but I can’t. The clear PVC has to be ordered online, at least I couldn’t find it locally. Got it from McMasters. Just plan on using an old extension cord for the power.

Everyone has there skills, and I am a huge proponent for saving money. With that said, I work on all my own stuff, never take it to a shop. Bought a boat unrigged and bought everything myself to make sure it was done right and save some money. Break a toilet, faucet, hot water heater, fix it myself. Rebuild a deck, install a new yard with underground drains, no problem. Try to build my own underwater fishing light, I’ll pass. Soldering just isn’t my thing. But to someone that is handy in micro-electronics, that looks fun to build.

here is a closeup of the wiring, one of the reds is connected to the white wire that goes to one end of the bulb and is soldered to both pins at one end. The blue wires are each connected to the other end of the bulb. The black wire to the + and the white to the -

got the bulb from hydroglow today along with a free shirt. They never even charged my card I gave them for the bulb. good customer service, above and beyond. wired everything back up and cemented it back together. Good as new. I also talked to someone at thinlite and they told me the same ballast will work for my 36wt8, tried it before I put the t12 bulb back in. The IB153 ballast fired up the light just fine. the rep from thin lite told me people are using that ballast for 40 GE bulds and it works fine.

Tom, Give Nova Lighting a call for the lamp. They are located off of 378 between Lex and W Cola. You can also buy a “tube guard” which is the clear tube from them or any other electrical wholesaler. The tube guards are easily found as they are required in the food prep industry and are available for T12, T8, or T5 lamps but the ends will not be solid. You can probably make your own ends by using the Plasti Dip liquid plastic available at Lowes or Home Depot. I hope this helps.

I actually have everything I need but the ballast. I got clear schedule 40 pvc from McMasters.
