Has anybody caught brown shrimp yet? They usually show up in June.
I caught some over the weekend. It was such a nice surprise to see shrimp around.
I’m guessing they were small - bait size?

The majority were 3-4” perfect for bait
That’s good news on the brownies. I just hope the white shrimp rebound from this tough winter. It will probably be August/September till we know. I have a couple of young grandboys who need some creek education! Can’t wait to take them shrimping!

Seeing lots and lots of small white shrimp (1") around the north myrtle area.pleasantly surprised and hoping for a decent season this year.
How do you guys tell the difference between white and brown shrimp?
I think the brownies have the antenna that are like twice their body length and white’s antenna are about their body length…where’s Barbawang when you need him?

I was at the jetties catching a couple 20+lb red drum, sorry for the delay.
Brownies are all that should be in the creeks now, and the white shrimp should be spawning now with their juveniles showing up in July. The best way I know to differentiate them is that browns (and pinks) have a groove along the base of the rostrum and the dorsal edge of the telson that you can feel with your fingernail and see once you know it.
to wit: “White shrimp can be distinguished from brown and pink shrimp by their lack of a groove along the dorsal midline of the carapace (shell) and last section of the tail (telson). The groove on brown shrimp is wider than on pink shrimp (it is difficult to insert a fingernail in the pink shrimp telson groove)” excerpted from http://dnr.sc.gov/swap/supplemental/marine/penaeidshrimpguild2015.pdf

so my dad has just been breaking off the antenna on some shrimp and telling me they are whites for the last 40 years?
The Morris Island Lighthouse www.savethelight.org
No, there’s plenty of truth there- my dad showed me the same. I found another DNR thing that said whites have longer antennae (I’ve heard around 2x body length I think). They get damaged enough that it’s not always a reliable metric though, and any comparative identifier like “longer antennae” is hard to use unless you know you’re looking at both species at the same time
Look at the horn on the head, the white shrimp has a single horn. The brown shrimp has a single horn, and what looks like another on both sides of the main horn. Never heard anything about the length of feelers.
I suggest you epoxy a pitcher of each shrimps on your cooler so you can figure it out. I believe they close to the same color after they boils.
I’d like some info on planning dog parties.
Sorry to mess up the thread.
They’s all shrimpy on the inside… but, mo’ smalla, mo’ sweeta!
Where baitman is when u needum?
I had to go see for myself, first shrimp I’ve caught this year. Only got 3 of them, antenna length <1.5x body length, and you can see the grooves on the head and tail
Thank for the info guys!
I feel more smarter now, thanks… hopefully I’ll be able to apply my lessons soon

After all that dorsal, carapace and telson talk, my head is spinning. All I know if they are big enough they go on the hook or in the pot
