Are we required to use circle hooks for bsb in federal waters?
Yes

That’s a good question, Swampbo! All I can say is that no BSB will still have a hook in it’s mouth when I get back to the landing! If I’ve caught my 5, on the wrong type of hook, they have to prove it.
Marshgrass! Where did you find that information?

What happened to the vent tool requirement? It’s nolonger on the latest SAFMC summary that you can download from their website?
You are required to have a dehooking device onboard as well as use non stainless circle hooks when bottom fishing using bait. Not applicable when jigging.
But seriously, for BSB, I think you could make your own hooks out of chicken bones and still catch your limit in no time.
13 inch limit now too.
I believe the 13" minimum for BSB does not begin until 7/1/12
circle hooks are the best thing going for most bottom fish. they work better than anything out there if you are fishing with natural bait . have never seen a fish gut hooked! If you have to measure a bsb, you should let it go! a 12/13" bsb ain’t got a fillet worth killing the fish over. 20+bsb’s are everywere now! JUST SAYING!
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
agree with the bug…let those smaller bsb swim.
It’s a great life, if you don’t weaken…
Personally, I don’t keep BSB. They all get thrown back.

I’m leaving them for everone else:smiley: Except if someone is on the boat that want’s to keep a few I will toss them in the box.
So what’s the answer on having a vent tool onboard? Anyone?
all I see is the mention of a dehooking device when fishing for snapper/grouper series, nothing about vent tools…

The Morris Island Lighthouse www.savethelight.org
The rule states that is will be unlawful to posses snapper grouper complex species without also possessing </font id=“yellow”> non stainless steel circle hooks as well.
You need to have them on your boat. Might be a good idea to at least take em out of the box and tie a few leaders to em.

Our tradition is that of the first man who sneaked away to the creek when the tribe did not really need fish.
I just returned from the The National Marine Fisheries Service 2012 Protected Species Safe Handling, Release and Identification Workshop. They had the list .
Just like the circle hooks.
You need the dehooking and venting tools on your vessel if you are in possesion of fish in the snapper grouper complex.
The best value I have seen is the Ventafish Consevation Pack. $19.00
Has everything you need to be legal , it is idiot proof and when it gets down to it’s is worth 19 bucks to have that 1 baby grouper make it back to the bottom to grow up and put a serious bend in your rod in a few years.
