Bucktails?

Can fish be caught at night trolling bucktails?

I haven’t used them at night, but I do remember seeing reports on here from the guys that fish Moultrie saying they got them on 1 oz bucktails at night.

Sure wish I had a memory for other stuff like I do for facts related to fishing. Takes me 10 minutes to find my glasses every morning. I need them before I can start searching for where I left my keys.

I gotta have mine so I can find my glasses  I would try something a little different at night if I had to fish lures. I’ve caught more stripers with a spoon. I remember using bucktails behind Russell dam during construction but that was deversion canal fishing and they had it lit up like a Christmas tree! O have used a spoon made for trout trolling at night and had some success. Sutton makes them in chrome and copper. Chrome on one side and copper on the other. You would have to use a high quality swivel but I don’t remember having much problem with twist.

Sure. You can catch them on bucktails at night with bucktails; however, I would use Roadrunners or that style head for added vibration with the blade. Dark colors for the jig and worm trailer would also be a must for me.

I use buck tails exclusively in 8-12ft in Murray in the spring and will catch them through dusk and up to pitch black but they tend to stop biting at a certain point. I suspect they use sight and vibration when looking for food so taking one sense away makes it more difficult for them. I imagine it can be done but question the success rate vs. day time.

On the other side of the spectrum I’ve found that some of the plugs I pull at night don’t work for me during the day even if fishing deep in the summer. Something about a big plug during the day must not look right to them.

I’ve never tried it, but I’d imagine that water clarity, ambient light and moon phase could affect the success rate. I’d think clear water and a full moon would yield the best results, just like most nighttime largemouth tournaments.

Yes they work but switch to a pearl white or a glow color at night and make sure you are using a snake worm or some sort of trailer. Don’t use the green like in the day time.

I’ve caught a few at night with a blue/white roadrunner bucktail, with a blue snake work trailer before. They wouldn’t hit the ones without a spinner, nor would they hit the green or red.

Jim Farmer, owner of Castaway Baits, will be at the MSC meeting June 11 to do a presentation on trolling and the tackle that he produces. Check out his website here: http://www.castawaybaits.com/servlet/StoreFront
I have known Jim for about 10 years and he will custom make whatever bucktails or plastic bodies you want…excellent prices and quality workmanship. I really like his horsehead jigs for trolling on leadcore line. I will probably get some of his castable “Georgia Rigs” for whacking the schooling fish. If you have a special color combo in mind, maybe with a little mylar flash to it or some special spinner blades added to it, he can fix you up…he can deliver and save you the shipping if you let him know what you want…Discount codes offered to MSC members as well…

Thanks. I would like to be at that meeting. Is it still at the Flight Deck? Will he have baits for sale or just demo?

I’m not really sure what all he is bringing but i know if you ask for something he surely will…give him a call or email…
