Bucktails

The legendary striper killing lure… How do you guys like to work those bad boys

“Cause there’s more birds on that side”

Many like to use an ice fly behind the bucktail on a leader. I just use a white bucktail with a chartreuse twisty tail trailer. Throw it out into the school, let it sink a little and medium speed retrieve. I am mostly a bait man, but I have probably caught more with this method than any other artificial. Plus the bucktail is a lot more in my budget that the other lure you posted. Although I guess I spend $25 on herring for one trip and have nothing but memories when the trip is over.

I troll them and cast them. Green is by far the best on Murray. I always use a snake worm as a trailer.

When throwing in schools, a 1/2 ounce or larger bucktail trailed by two 1/4 ounce bucktails. When you hook a fish play it slowly through the school and you may bring in two or three. Use atleast 30 lbs. test between the bucktails. I never slow wind bucktails. Always hop the bucktails, thats just the way I’ve always been told to work them. I catch a lot of doubles with this set-up and have caught three at a time. The object is to catch atleast one that’s a keeper, but I have had two keepers at a time before. After years of fishing on Murray chartreuse is the only color I use now. Works with bucktails, spoons and topwaters for me.

Sorry, I’m old school, lucky to even be able to turn this danged computer on, much less be able to post pictures. Just tie the big bucktail to your line from the rod as usual. Then tie appr. 30" of the heavier line to the same eye facing backwards. Tie the first small bucktail about 14" behind the big one, don’t cut off the excess line and tie the last small bucktail about 12" back. Lastly trim off any excess line. Fluorocarbon or monofillament will both work on this home made rig. You have to make smooth casts to keep this rig from tangling up. Use little or no wrist action, swing your arm back and through from the side, not overhead. Throw past the schooling fish if possible and twitch the baits back through the school. With a school moving on top, try to always throw in front of the direction they are moving.
