Bug ID

Anybody know what kind of bug this is? My dad was doing a home inspection and said there were “hundreds of 'em” under this place. I’ve never seen one before. He said a couple of them jumped on him and bit him. I wonder if they’d make good bream bait?

It might have been the spiky hooks on their legs that felt like a bite. He said it hurt. I would have gone back in with a can of Raid.

Yep, Camel cricket, also known as cave cricket. Usually only found in cool, damp, dark areas like crawl spaces. I have them in my barn but only on a concrete block wall. They probably can bite just like any cricket if you put your finger at their jaws but they won’t attack like a wasp. They are strong jumpers but some people think they don’t see well. I don’t try to control them but if you are overrun with them you could try to increase ventilation in the area.

I plan on living forever, so far so good

A can of raid with a lighter as a pilot flame...

Growing up my grandparents basement had a bunch of these. Our cousin told my brother and I they were called crotch crickets due to the fact that they would jump on your ‘stuff’ and bite you. When my grandmother would ask us to go down to the basement to get something, an intense game of paper rock scissors usually broke out. To this day Im still a little weary of those guys -
