It was a last ditch effort to catch some grouper before environmental Nazis shut it down.[:0]
So we headed out at 6:30 AM to meet43 degree’s and a choppy sea but managed to make 30 MPH out the first spot for some live bottom action. The wind and waves just would not cooperate for drift fishing and we only managed small bsb’s.
Left there run to spot two to find Miss Amanda pulling a few keepers from the depths. So we found a good looking spot and anchored up.
We had 3 grunt taken off the live bait rig but could not get a hook in them. The last one I even let him take it like a flounder???
The prize of the day was my buddy John catching a bull red 38 inches long and about 30 pounds. We bloodied his lip with grips. But he speed away like a released red should.
The bite slowed by about 3:00 with calming seas so we went to hole three to find a wide open BSB bite. I heard an unfamiliar sound and we were graced to see a right whale surface 50 yards from us three different times. What a cool sight to see. It would not hold still enough for a picture but very cool nun the less. We reeled bsb’s in two at a time for two hours straight and left them biting with the daylight waning.
Just another awesome day in the low country aboard HYDROTHERAPY.
Total
120 bsb’s 40 kept
25 ringtails
10 grunts

paul just want to thank you again for taking my two boys out to their first trip to the big pond. when you have someone feeling realy bad most of the day but not complain a bit, and come to life at the end and have a great time made me proud. i had a great time watching them experence fishing where there is no land in sight. their highlight of the day was catching the sharks. mine was watching them catching sharks… and the spottail!

A flying gaff, 100 foot of line and a slalom skie would be fun!

Hydro, do you keep the ring tails & grunts to eat? My dad kept grunts when we were growing up but he had 8 kids to feed. Don’t remember if they were any good.
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
The small white grunts i use for grouper bait. Some of the other larger species of grunts I eat and the rings tails are not bad either. I just fried up a bowl full of them and they were delicioso. I also give them to older family members who are not able to fish and can’t afored to buy fresh meat. Not lobster for sure but much better that captian d’s.
