Bull Red

After several attempts, I can’t seem to get the ‘search’ feature to work so I’ll just ask. Serious question, at what point does a Redfish become a “Bull Red”? There seems to be a wide range of sizes as far as I can tell and both genders seem to qualify.

-The size of a fish is directly proportional to the time between when it’s lost and the story is told. - Me
-What’s the best eating fish, you ask? I’ve found that for a lot people, its the ones that they happen to be able to catch, clean, and cook. - My Dad
-Until you have loved a dog, part of your soul remains unawakened. Anatole France (paraphrased)
-RIP my “Puppy Dog” 10/15/2004 - 1/14/2013. I’ll never forget him. What a special friend he was.

Subjective indeed. I don’t even think I’ve ever used the term, but don’t consider anything short of an adult fish to be a “bull”.

I’ve heard the term used for anything over slot, which grinds my gears about as much as calling a trout or a flounder a “slot” fish.

I like to target bull whiting instead. Slot whiting, I mean.

I’m with Optiker, I’ve always considered anything over 30" a “bull.”

Never shoot a large caliber man with a small caliber bullet.

I don’t really use the term but I would go with 35+ if I was defining it because that’s when the length to weight ratio starts closing in and they are a lot less common to catch then a 30.

Dito on the 30"+. 35"s pull hard compared to a 30", a good bit more weight. IMO

Some call em bulls when there are no witnesses :slightly_smiling_face::slightly_smiling_face::slightly_smiling_face:

Above 40". Reserved for the biggest of the bunch.

Imagine you were a charter captain and as your customer I said I wanted to target bull reds.
If you called a 30" red a bull red I would ask to be returned to the hill and demand my money back.
Not because we caught a 30" red, but because you don’t know what a bull red is.

Once you have pulled several 40+ inch reds over the side you realize how small a 30" red is and the status a real bull red has.
