Lol.

This is exactly why you and I get along… When its not football season.

Water this year isn’t hotter than normal. I was at WB jetties today and it was 79 degrees. No doubt more people are finding and catching the big, breeder Reds. They definitely need to learn how to get them freed ASAP…Myself. …I have enough fish pics. I straight ass let them go asap.

Easiest thing to do is change the regs to require circle hooks if you are fishing BAIT. Too many times, and with all species the fish is allowed to " swallow " it and then there is the FLW backwards back breaking hook set that drives a conventional J hook into the mediastinum ( heart, esophagus, etc) of a fish that will kill it then or later. Research after research has shown this so why not change the laws or your methods to protect what you love to do?

Because you would have a small army screaming about “don’t tell me what to do blah, blah, blah…” For every voice on here that would speak out in support of some form of change to address this issue, sadly, there are voices out there that would fight change. Some would use the “defense” I mentioned. Some would use the “lack of evidence” defense. Some would use the “we don’t care how you do it (insert different part of the country here)” defense. Sadly, ignorance runs rampant around every corner.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

Having caught a good many big reds from the jetties to way up the wando…the biggest mistake I’ve seen, including people on my own boat (causing me to go for a swim after said fish) is simply not reviving them long enough…they feel a little life and they let go of the fish and it comes up sideways 10 yards downstream…I always wait for a strong takeoff/water to the face, before letting go of them…sometimes it takes a minute, sometimes it takes 10 (which might feel like forever). Sometimes in the rush to put lines back out we rush the release. I try to teach whoever is with me to enjoy the release just as much as the fight.

Ill out fish a j hook with a circle every time fishing for big reds and most fish that aren’t super teeth.

I catch too many bull reds on plastic and top water while fishing for trout on light tackle in less than 5 feet of water. Venting is not an issue, but reviving the exhausted fish is. I’ve caught bulls, jacks, and 5-6’ sharks on top water plugs in 3’ of water. While the strike is exciting, they all require special attention when releasing.

Couldn’t agree more. I too spend most of my time in shallow water casting lures. No fish is released until it swims away under its own power. I hold on to the tail tight enough to where they have to “kick” out of my grip. And for God’s sake, don’t do the whole “back and forth” in the water method of reviving! Hold the fish by the tail, preferably facing into the current, and hold them there until they swim away as I described. The fish will swim away when it feels it is strong enough to do so.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

I could take that challenge with the smallest j-hook in my box .

Here’s a DIY version (username “claim” on this forum):

  1. Guessing how this fish died is pure speculation.
  2. Only a small percentage of fishermen, likely more experienced ones, are going to participate on this forum.
  3. The experienced fishermen probably don’t want to hear complaints every time a dead fish turns up.
  4. As long as there’s a slot limit, a handful of large and small fish will die for a multitude of reasons that are beyond the angler’s control. It’s a risk DNR is willing to take so that more survive.

Can we move on and let this thread die? I can only hope. . .

It's up to the people to let the thread die. It's pretty obvious that this fish was not vented however.

The first thing I did when i got my boat was go online and look at info on charleston. This is what I ended up on. I learned some things and some places. Though repetitive to some its helpful for others. Some people like to learn new tips and tricks.
