Want to try fishing for bull reds and possibly tarpon. All my inshore stuff is way to light. Was wondering if anyone could give some advice on tackle such as what size reel, rod and line # test and anything else I might have to get…

Stop by Haddrell’s or any of the Charleston Angler locations and just ask. If you are on a budget say so. I recommend looking at the Penn Battle series. I just picked up an 8000 to target Cobia/Kings/Tarpon and its an unbelievably good reel for $120. The drag on that thing would stop a train, and its very very smooth.

I target tarpon, sharks, dolphin, tuna etc with a Penn Battke 5000 on a 15-25 7ft Star Rods Stellar Light with 250 yards of 30 lb braid. I would consider stepping up to a 40-100 lb Shimano Trevala or Quantum Boca jigging rod (same $ as stellar lite) and a 6000 or 7000 Battle with 50 or 65 lb braid for bigger sharks and tarpon, bull dolphin, and sailfish. The first combo ran me about 250 to put together and has for sure caught 3 or 4 times it’s worth in fish.

I have much better fish to boat ratipos using conventional, lever drag reels spooled with 20-30 mono, more forgiving. Use the spinners and braid for lures and casting dead baits.
