Bullet Choice?

Been shooting them for 14 years now and have no complaints, from 300yds to up close and personal. Saltydog loads his own so I understand why he may not like them since he can load a superior round to his spec. 3 deer lost in a year would be due to where you put the bullet, not the bullet itself, and Remington auto loading rifles have a pretty ****ty reputation as far accuracy is concerned.

I put quotes around it because that’s the word that I’ve heard used the most to describe something that’s at the bottom of the cost & quality stack. Perhaps it’s a poor choice of words. Like I said in my earlier post every bullet has a purpose and core lok’s serve there’s. It’s a soft bullet, not meant to be used for a high degree of accuracy at long ranges or high penetration. Generally they are on the lower end of the scale for their ballistics co-efficient compared to many other bullets and they are typically the cheapest things on the shelf in copper jackets. BUT inside of 300 yards with most caliber’s the degree of difference that BC will make is at worst extremely minor.

And Like I said they are almost always available - so if you look in my garage at all of my rifle ammo, you will find a lot of them there! I think the 2 types of ammo i have the most of are that and Tul-Ammo because both are pretty cheap and I don’t feel bad grabbing a couple of boxes and spending a few hours at the range practicing with it.

Yeah but you know, how, where, why and when to shoot. Not to mention you probably have rifle zero’d better than a pie plate at 100yds. Still not a fan, never will be. Been hearing about quite a few issues this year, then again I question the shooting of some of them too.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I actually just bought a .308, what bullet would you all suggest in I’m shooting anywhere from 350yards and down. This rifle will be used for deer only. Thanks.

I switched from CL to ballistic tips a couple years ago and have switched back because the ballistic tips always went through the deer and left an awfully small hole. Blood trails were hard to follow.

Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.

Winchester super x soft points in 168 grain are killer in the .308 Ive never had a deer take one step after being hit with one.

i would be more inclined to blame the shooter and his tracking ability over the core-lokt bullet.

Well, as I have stated in another post, I use the Core-Lokt in the 30.06.
It may or may not be the best round, but I have given a truck ride to 14 15 deer this season that were shot using it.

Shot placement…

I finally got to test the Barnes Vortex bullet on a doe; probably weighed 120lbs… Shot distance approximately 330yds. Shot placement was about 1" to the right_ vertical was dead on. Deer ran about 50ft leaving a blood trail a foot wide from point of impact till she couldn’t go any further. The entry hole was less than a half inch with an oval shaped 1"?2" exit wound.

The Bullet did not destroy excess tissue. Projectile entered left side and exited through right.

I’m not a ballistic expert by any stretch, but I’ve found the Barnes vortex to be deadly this year in .270 and .243. I’ve shot Hornady in recent years and wasn’t impressed. Accuracy yes, but the exit holes were so minimal that heart and lung shots were somewhat difficult to track.
I’ve heard about the expansion concern with the Barnes. They claim they receive full expansion when passing through a grape, but I’m not so sure about that.

what caliber? and was it TSX, TSX Tipped, or TSX-FN? I saw some in Sportsmans Warehouse in Columbia, but the price scared me away. If I were to push my shot’s out past 300 I would substitute the corelock, but since I seldom go past 150 yards I’ll save my money.

I have heard a couple of the Boss’s friends say they were as close to a custom reload as you could get.

I prefer the closer shots. We have a farm that has a couple of large fields and those little darlings won’t come in closely. If we move the stands closer they usually wind me.

Not trying to be a smart arse but learn to hunt the wind. If the wind is not right do not hunt that area. They CANNOT wind you if you hunt the wind.

Haz I know about the wind thing.
The deer come out on the south and east sides of the property. There is a house n barns on the north side. A hi way and 8 ft tall chain link fence on west side.
Gotta watch out for landowners buildings while keeping the deer off the crops. The deer come to the fields every night. I try to hunt to keep them off the crop until we harvest. Just one of those stands gotta be there as much as possible no matter the wind direction.

diesel fuel… works wonders as a cover for scent.

shrimp king - barnes varmint grenade claims to open in a grape. I’ve got them for my .223 loaded by black hills ammo and they are nasty. They won’t penetrate a racoon’s body but if you take a head shot it turns it into a red mist. Apparently they realy shine when they get hot hand loads behind them.
Docsorders - Great Report and a nice shot! gotta love it when a blood trail looks like a modern art masterpiece.
