Took advantage of the excellent weather to target some reds up north on the 1st grass tide that I could get a hall pass for. Wind was steady out of the SE but perfect for throwing the long rod. We picked a couple off the grass line waiting for the water to rise and then ended up snagging a couple OTF. We saw 7-8 solid tailing fish and had a couple come unhooked and sent the rest to spooksville. OK for the 1st wade session of the season, but some of the casts were off the mark and I could tell the long rod had been dormant for a few months.
Nice fish!

Awesome job. May be kind of a goofball question, but what kind of shoes do you wade in? And isn’t the water temp still only in the upper 50’s, maybe low 60’s on the warmer mud flat?

Water temp was reading 63 on the outside, probably a couple deg warmer on the flat. I was just using the standard orvis flats boot, neoprene upper w/ studded sole. As long as you don’t wade down where you jeopardize the low hangers, it’s not that cold. I was never uncomfortable. It felt like a summertime mtn trout stream.
Great pictures. Thanks for posting. Wet wading was fine in both Bulls Bay and the Wando for me this weekend (of course I am a mtn trout guy so anything over 50 is good for wet wading in my opinion ).
Nice man!
Nice fishes. Good news on the tailers. I certainly didn’t have much luck up north on Sunday.

Good work!

Maybe I’m an idiot but I simply wade the flats in Crocs, never had a issue. Will get some snails under my feet from time to time but they just get crunched up and become chum

I wear chacos and love them but its a pain when they get stuck between your toes from time to time.

Thanks for the input. I just got my fly rod/reel setup and am uncertain as to what I should wear when trying to hit the flats on these flood tides this spring/summer. Appreciate the response!

I have a pair off boots I got from bass pro… They were about $30 simple neoprene boot with hard sole on bottom and zipper up the side. I like them pretty good for the money.
