Bulls Bay

I have always wanted to try Bulls Bay. Am I wasting my time going there this time of year or ever? I have a friend in Georgetown with a flats boat and were wanting to go out tomorrow. Or do you guys have a better idea for Trout and Reds.

Relax, turbo, it’s been less than 1.5 hours…

I’ve shrimped that area, but have never fished it. Someone with experience will be along sooner or later.

Allen this time last year after the thaw, we were still catching redfish out on some flats when Sun was up high and some trout on Oyster rakes. We have done that over the years quite a few times… that Bay beats to its on drum for some reason… definitely worth a shot… We normally put in at Garrison landing over by the Awendaw outpost… and fish the south Bay area.

Wicked fishing

Hey AllenH, I’m not an expert by any means but I would not overlook the Cape Romaine area for the same type fishing. Some great looking areas up that way! I shrimp more than fish there but have had decent luck when I did wet a hook. Good luck! Pls report if u get a chance!

And don’t forget to try right along the waterway itself. Lots of little feeder creeks worth a shot. Daddy and I often fished these with good success. Careful in the bay itself…tricky at times

Tricky at times, you got that right penny.I’ve been handed a few skunks up there.haha I betcha that old codger Flying High has been catching his share if he’s still around. I’m going next week, might not get no fish but I’ll surely get a couple oysters.

Did you get out? We Fish BB sporadically in late fall / winter and as a result it’s really uneven. Will crush it in a spot or two and then next time, nada. I have not figured out the why of it. But I have figured out that even in areas where you think you have water, you might not have water! Don’t go on a windy day, particularly if blowing E or NE.

Never been in it and plan to this year as I’m wanting to expand my search areas. Having a knee replaced in Feb so I’ll be off the water for a Month or so but then I plan to get up to the landing that’s near the seawee outpost and go learn about that fishery. Have heard it’s treacherous to navigate so will be taking my time and doing a LOT of map study while I’m recovering from getting my busted wheel replaced.

I fish there often. I have read a lot about Bulls Bay/Cape Romain. I don’t doubt it was once an excellent fishery. It has all the indicators that it should be. However, I find that it’s not living up to its reputation. I’ve caught reds, trout, jack crevalle and various types of shark there. But the numbers haven’t impressed me much. It’s also a difficult area to fish, because there are a LOT of shallow areas. The bay is deceiving. Water moves out of there fast and it is VERY easy to get stuck out there. You cannot fish it at low tide. I usually aim for high tide, then fish the outgoing until I run out of water. There are a LOT of oyster beds, which makes it almost impossible to bottom fish. And when you do hook up on a fish near the grass, there’s about a 50/50 chance you’ll cut your line on an oyster bed.

Bulls Bay is beautiful. I love it out there, and I’ll keep going, but it’s not where I go when I’m looking to fill the fish box.

It is quite treacherous to navigate. You can find yourself on an oyster bed real quick. Best way to get out to the bay is to follow the ferry out from Garris Landing to Bull Island. The ferry moors up in Bull Creek, which goes out into the bay. The ferry route is on Google Maps too if you don’t want to follow the slow ferry.

Even following the ferry route, you’ll find it very uncomfortable. You’ll come within 10 yards of oyster beds and wonder if there’s enough water under your boat to keep you from getting a nice oyster rash.

at dead low you better be in the channel or be riding in a tunnel hull. that’s exaggerated, but it gets VERY shallow once you get off the channel watch your depth. On the incoming tide once you come into bulls bay out of Anderson creek on the oyster shoal on the left watch the bait usually catch some very nice reds and black drum

usually September time frame you can triple tail in anderson creek also

As always no fish in Bulls Bay.

Ive heard bullsbay has the best fishing in the area. Oysters are like inshore reefs/livr bottom they are great for fishing. Dnr studies talk about how rich and diverse it is and its based on a study from south of edisto to a little north of mud bay. I know the folly stono and around the harbor is the worst ive seen ever. The fishy spots are all known so they’re over fished and the freeze last year had a huge impact in the folly area. Murrels and myrtle have had good reports though. Ive heard edisto isnt the same since last year. I think the edisto to harbor got the worst of the cold kill. I plan to fish up that way some this year. Ive heard the santee has been better than usual last few years. I know the santee has crushed the cooper run for herring and shad the last 3 years so im sure there is a reason for it. All that bait migrating has to do something for it. Most reports ive gotten since last year all point to north of the harbor having the better fishing now.

Yeah, Bulls Bay/Cape Romaine fished out

I didn’t mean to dissuade you but January is not the month to explore bulls bay, unless you know where you are going . There are fish to be caught but there are better times. When you hit the right day you will think you are a professional. Some years more so than others. The time you get stranded will make you not want to go back. That being said the fishing “catching” there will rival what you see on television . I won’t give any secret spots or info but when you figure it out you won’t either.
Good luck
