Did an hour bottom search with the sonar across the harbor from Sumter, can anyone help me out with some distances from shore and what I’m looking for on the Sonar? Depth, etc. Can’t seem to find the scructure
KINDA HARD TO DO NOT KNOWING EXACTLY THE WATERS YOUR COVERING…TRY RUNNING A ZIG ZAG PATTERN FROM HARBOR ENTRANCE INTO HARBOR ON IOP SIDE FROM NEAR BEACH TO MID CHANNEL ;YA SHOULD SEE ABOUT 40FT DEPTH IN PLACES AND ALL SORTS OF RIP-RAP ON THE BOTTOM AS YOU CROSS OVER THE GRILLAGE AREA…DON’T VENTURE OUT AS FAR AS THE JETTY STRUCTURE IF YOU’RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THEM … IF YOU’VE GOT GPS RUN OUT TO ONE OF THE NEAR SHORE ARTIFICIAL REEFS AND LOOK AROUND ON A REALLLL CALM DAY , PREFERABLE WITH A BUDDY BOAT TO TAG ALONG…

About 200 yds off sumter and the closest red bouy on sullivans side are good starting points. Look for 25ft of water and work your way toward the channel and you will see how it drops off. You basically want to fish the edge of the channel. If you go at low incoming you can see the tide line on the sullys side good on high out going you see the tideline good on the sumter side. Or you can just anchor in line with everybody else. I like sullys on incoming and the ft on the out going. Both i preffer very close to dead tideband the first hr of good water flow. Live bait is king and use some light wire like 8 or 9 single strand doubled or tripled up and make a short 12inch carolina rig. You will catch less sharks and reds have zero care about wire, i actualy out fish flouro with wire in the sumter spot twice by about 2 to 1 with reds vs shark but it was also starboard vs port so idk.
40 - Are you saying that you fish the tideline or that the tideline is more evident on that side of channel so you fish that side of the channel edge?

Looks like he fishes both, depending on the tide. The tideline will give you a good idea of where the edge is. Once you see it, look at your bottom reader and you should see the drop off.
Also, you may want to watch a YouTube video or two on how to play around with your settings, fine tune your bottom reader, and what to look for. Lot’s of good stuff out there.
Some of the structure is just plain hard to see when you have waves moving you up/down/pitch/yaw/roll. If you want to see some good stuff, use what they call “side imaging” which paints a good pic of both sides of the vessel. And… you can move your cursor to the structure (usually?) and see the Lat/Lon of the item of interest. Works very well on my Humminbird. I can see redfish or crappie under docks… Examples:
So… this is a $3000 unit. Here is the unit I use… still pretty good:

DillyDally: Looks like the Garmin Echo series and Hummingbird has the same style layout. Like it !!!
