Bunker Spoons

Anyone down here use 'em? If you do, any luck with 'em?

shut up and listen…you might learn something

never heard of 'em, so i googled it. looks like a “drone” spoon to me?

typically trolled for spanish, kings and bluefish (ours don’t get nearly as big as the ones you’re used to), can be cast too.

caught a 3lb spanish on one last weekend trolled at 5kts and 15’ down

Used to troll em on wire line for big stripers, The ones I use have a lead weight that can be positioned to vary your trolling speed. Typically they’re used with specialized rod around 8 1/2’ long with a limber end so it helps impart action on the spoon as it’s pulled. I had great luck with the drone spoons used as a center drop back on an umbrella rig. Sounds like a bunker spoon might have a niche down here-now all I need is a boat ha ha, thanks for the input

We used to use Clark’s spoons for kings when I was a kid. Yes, they work for a few species, but don’t expect to be catching ocean stripers here. Ours are riverene.

back in '04 when i started fishing down here, i used all my Northern fishing gear for the boat and the surf… Ava Jigs 27,37,47, Diamond Jigs, bucktails…teaser rigs…never had any hits…finally figured out how to fish the Charleston Waters. Took me a few years though.

kut08, I’m acutally looking forward to relearning how to fish, I have hundreds of dollars in gear for trolling bass and blues. Just wanna be sure I won’t regret ebaying the stuff before I sell it. Goin back up to NJ for the weekend, tryin to get a ride with someone for a striper trip but nobody goin out yet.

Tip em with squid, use for Mahi. Fun with spinnin reel to sight cast for em!

Diamond jigs and bucktails work here, too. You just have to know when, where, and how.

You know I’ll fish with you pretty much anytime, man.

The Cooper River is shut down for striper for the nex 3 or 4 years, though, unfortunately. Both baits are effective on other species, too, though.

first thing i saw when i opened the saltwater sportsman last night was an article on stripers with bunker spoons!

i see now that they’re a bit different than the drones, esp with that sliding weight in the center. thanks for making me aware of a new lure.

as far as needing a boat, you can get on blues, some spanish and occasional jacks (under 5-10lb usu) from the beach with any spoon heavy enough to pitch to the blitz.

I’m getting the impression it’ll work down here on lot’s of species, I suppose any creature that wants to chase down an adult menhaden at 3 to 4 knots. Looking forward to trying one for giggles-if not there’s ebay
