burning smell ??? voltage regulator

Put the boat in slip yesterday and notice a burning smell. Oil level is fine, doesnt smell burnt and the motor did not overheat. Anyone had any trouble or experienced a voltage regulator that has gone bad or melted. I read they give off a burnt smell when they go out???

its very helpful to know the year, HP, and Make of the product being discussed

Its and 02 suzuki df140, I pulled the electrical cover off tonight and found the plastic connector at the voltage regulator had melted. Would this cause the motor to die at low rpms? For the past few months the motor would stall when coming off the throttle, I have also had to advance the throttle to start the motor on occasion, or is that connected to IAC valve.
Thanks for you thoughts Chris. I owe you a twelve pack for your internet response.

low battery voltage can cause this issue
bad cables
stator
