Took advantage of the early AM tide and tried out the surf near the North Inlet on Sunday. Caught lots of finger mullet right in the mouth of the inlet while avoiding all of the stingrays that were there for breakfast. 1st clue that the warm water was not quite ready for prime time. Fished 3 rods with my brother and his 2 young boys from 9:30 AM until noon when the tide ran us off of the point. Lots of activity re. birds and bait. All strikes resulted in cut offs, with one notable exception that I fought for 30 minutes until I cranked the drag down and broke it off. Probably a monster ray the way it fought. It was fun for awhile, but my forearm was telling me I wasn’t going to win. The sharks are in control for now, but the good times they are a commin’. I love the solitude and sense of freedom that surf fishing gives me, and when that rod goes off, anythings possible. I’d say we’re about a month away from the sharks and stingrays getting out of the surf zone, and then it’s on like Donkey Kong!
