I took my dad out fishing today. I tried some new stuff and struck out, but I rigged him up on what’s been working for me and he caught a slam of sorts. I rigged him up with a 20 lb leader, a 1/8 oz “shakey head” style jig head, and a purple “junebug” trick worm. We were working on Grove Creek around the BP recreation area where they have the boat ramp and floating dock and all for employees of BP.
The old man landed three largemouth bass, five trout (one keeper size), and one monster redfish. What a great day, and I got to spend it with my dad!
We left the landing at about 11 AM and came back in right before sunset. The only time the bite turned off was around high tide when the water stopped moving.

Oh, yeah…and the redfish was a 32", 14 lb male. He was drumming like crazy when we got him in the boat. Biggest one of my dad’s life, and he’s been fishing here for a looooooooooooong time.

Man yeah, nice trip!!! Gotta love the chance to catch a largemouth and a redfish in the same trip. Bruiser vs. bruiser (although I must admit a partiality to the redfish, by far)
I know what you mean. I grew up freshwater fishing mostly for bass. I haven’t been chasing the reds for long, but once I caught my first one I was hooked. The largemouths came in the boat quickly after hook set, the red fought like his life depended on it. It was very impressive.
We snapped the pics quickly and got him right back in the water. After a little revival wiggling, he gave me a nice splash of water to the face and went off to make more trophy reds with his lady friends.

Any time on the water is great, none the less getting to spend it with your dad plus catching fish.
Not to be off topic, I just saw your handle with a Big Ugly Homemade Blue Push Pole. Looks pretty good to me. How did you go about making it? I bought a Stiffy tip and mud foot last year thinking that I would find a carbon fiber rod to order and make my own. Found some rods but they are very expensive to order just one, and then shipping too.
If you don’t mind, could you snap a picture of the push pole?
Goob,
It’s 2 10’ sections of 1 1/4" PVC with one 10’ section of 1" PVC glued into the middle. I filled it with expanding foam to try to add rigidity, but I think all that did was make it heavier. Total cost was $25.
I made it to get me by until I can afford a fancy real one. It gets the job done for me for as little as I actually push in and sight fish.

What a great time with your dad. I know that area well and I’m surprise you guys didn’t get a striper also. My partner and I have caught it all inthat area to include some nice cats. Nice post
