Went out fishing with a best friend and his dad today. We were on a time limit and had to fish this morning meaning fish around the high tide. We kind of drifted around and trolled on the east side of the Yellow House horseshoe. We worked the bank with trick worms, mud minnows, and a spinnerbaits and also dragged a Carolina rig and float with mud minnows on them.
Fishing the high was tough, and we weren’t seeing many signs of life. We spotted some bait jumping in the middle of the big mud flat and ran the trolling motor to try to get over to them and see what was going on, but by the time we got close it was all over. We worked the edge of the grass some more and slowly trolled up to where Flagg Creek dumps into Yellow House. I was running my mouth and not paying attention when I looked and suddenly realized my cork was gone! I tightened up my line, felt a tug, and set the hook! I thought it was a small redfish, but it turned out to be my first striper ever!
As the water fell with the outgoing tide, we saw the action around us picking up. We were on a strict time limit imposed by our bosses, so we stowed our gear and reluctantly headed back to the landing. It was a beautiful day to be on the water!

I hooked that fish about 15’ away from the boat. It went straight to the bottom and stayed there running left to right. When I got it up off the bottom and to the boat, it took off on a run. I fought it back to the boat. It took off again. It did that over and over. There was no quitting until it came out of the water. They certainly have a distinct personality.
I released this fish pretty quickly. It looked very healthy. I’m guessing that’s one from the stocking program?
I wouldn’t mind catching another one sometime. I don’t really know how to target them, though. We were just looking to catch anything that would bite today.
