We finally got the babysitting logistics in line, and I got to take the boss fishing today. We went to my latest favorite spot and goofed around at the mouth of a feeder creek I have affectionately named " Red Lung".
We arrived about 1 1/2 hours before dead low and after trolling and throwing my way to my spot, I anchored us up at the spot. We had bait all over the place and fish rolling on them. Nothing wanted my cut mullet on a Carolina rig or the mud minnow under a cork the boss was throwing. I started the day throwing a mud minnow under a green/chartreuse skirt with a spinner blade on it (this was already on the rod I was throwing, so I figured I’d stick with it to see if anything would grab it). With all of the mullet running around I figured I’d try to match what they were chasing, so I tied on a Bomber Badonk-a-donk (Slow Sinking) and gave it a shot.
Once the tide turned and started coming back in, the action around us picked up, and I got a hit on the Badonk-a-donk. It was my first flounder ever!
About ten minutes later I get an even harder hit, and I knew exactly what it was. I handed the rod off immediately to Mrs HoofArded, and she reeled in this beauty of a red!
We had a fun day, and I think the boss is now hooked on fishing. She has been out catfishing and bream fishing with me, but this was the first time she had been inshore saltwater fishing with me. I had a lot of fun explaining the tides and fish behavior and all.
Water temperature up in the creek was 70 degrees! The water clarity was awful due to all that rain that came through. I think we would have done a lot better if the water hadn’t been so cloudy.
