HOLY CRAP!! I hooked my first redfish yesterday and he was a monster! I chucked out a peice of cut mullet and before it could hit bottom I saw my rod bend, I thought it was the current but it started to dance a little so I grabbed it and started to reel and the fight was on. He spooled off some line and I gained it back and as we did battle my heart was racing and tunnel vision set in. It was like buck fever, only this time I already had him stuck. The epic battle lasted about 2 minutes, although it felt like hours, when he finally got close to my yak. As he got closer and saw the boat he turned and drove out again, I raised my rod tip to keep the pressure on and I heard a loud CRACK what I thought was surely the DNR guy shooting at me, and this obviously out of the slot red, for fun was actually my brand new Shimano Sojourn rod snapping in half, right where the 2 peices join. The line went slack and I kept reeling but it was too late. He had spit the hook and I was now set about trying to retieve my broken rod end. I sat there in the sun bobbing around in my yak, some dope in a bayliner came by about 20 ft away at Mach 2, and reflected on the battle. Brothers and sisters, I am hooked now. Like a junkie looking for his next fix, I want to see that shiny new penny color and big black spot on the end of my line, and in my boat for the picture Man what a rush. I didn’t get another bite the rest of the day but I had a blast.

oh man, rods breaking is never good. on your first fish too. dang! we caught 3 on cut mullet yesterday, one 23’’, one 25’’, one 28’’, fun fun. you think your hooked on spinning for em, just wait till you hook up to an over slot red with a fly rod!
I am working on learning my new yak right now before I get out the fly rod. I have been practicing in the back yard sitting down but I am having trouble keeping the fly out of the grass behind me… Getting better but not there yet I have been tying copperheads and I have taken the coppper head pattern and used electric chicken colors, I call it the chicken head I am fillin g up my fly box and getting ready for it but the casting is slow coming. If I got that excited over that red I can’t WAIT to get one on the fly…

I had a good morning today and the weather was fantastic. 6 or 7 trout biggest going 21", 2 spottails - one at 22", and a nice flounder at 16". Most were caught on the grub, but the 2 biggest trout on minnows.
Let me know when ya got a morning off work and I’ll meet ya out there.
cutmullet,i think its time i start trying bushy.you have showed me from your reports that there are alot of trout to be caught out there.i wish i knew where to go from landing.i have always fished from a big boat out there, and we always went a good distance from the landing.i dont know any spots close.guess i better get out there and scout it out.
nikonjedi Do you think the shimno rod snapped in half because the two pieces werent joined together properly. Maybe it wasnt pushed in all the way? Maybe when the fish hit it slightly pull the 2 sections apart. Anyway, a big fish will hook you for life, even if he gets away. Good luck on your next big fish.
The next morning I get off I’ll let ya know and we’ll tear 'em up! As for the Rod, I am pretty sutre it was seated correctly. I am debating on keeping it and putting it on the wall:smiley: or returning it and getting a new one:wink:
