7 trout… all to small… all caught trolling with a blue/green flat tail shad. Most caught 2 hours before and 1st hour after high tide in Clouter and Yellowhouse creek… Wind picked up and left around noon. Water looked better today than last week. Starting to clear. Water temp 67.
Curious about your trout trolling method… How deep/shallow are you cruising? And how are you running these with a small planer or just straight lined back?
Sure Phish. I try to stay in about 4-6 feet of water, as close to the grass line as I can get. No planer, just straight line. The flat tail shad might have a 1/4 oz weight built in. I change the distance of the lure behind the boat occasionally, somewhere around 30 -40 yards. When I get into deeper water I will sometime take it out of gear and let the bait fall to the bottom. Many times when I do that I will pick up a red or flounder. Will often pick up reds when I go around a bend and the bait hits the bottom.
Casting is fun for awhile but wears my old body out and still fishing can be boring and HOT. I like to move it move it.
Hey Mike - Great report and advice. Very helpful for me because I have been starting to troll a little more and I’m just going off trial and error righ now. I can use all the advice I can get. Sounds like I have a similar setup as you…20ft sea hunt, 150 yamaha 4stroke. I normally fish the Sullivans,IOP,Dewees area. I also have a questions. Do you troll all summer with artificials also or just spring and fall? Sometimes I find it tough to get anything to hit artificials in the summer with so much bait in the water. Again thanks for you advice.
