My schedule and the weather have not been working well lately. Yesterday I checked the forecast and radar, and it all looked doable. The forecast before we left looked like small scattered light showers with a little wind weakening as it got later. My buddy agreed, so we jumped in the truck and headed to the landing. We ran into StumpNocker at the landing. He was loading out, and we were launching. We talked for a minute, and then we were off.
We got rained on a little on the way to the spot, but it was the light stuff we were expecting. We saw a little lightning up toward the lake. I didn’t really think anything of it, because it appeared to be staying north of us and going around. We fished in the light rain trolling up into the creeks, and then the rain stopped. The fish were active and going nuts all around us. For a few minutes I was thinking I had made a good gamble, and it was going to pay off. Then the “Oh Sh**!” moment appeared. [:0]
At that point, the heavy stuff was right in between us and the landing. It was too late to leave. We were both wearing rain suits, so we sat down on the bottom of the boat and waited it out. The rain was so heavy that at points I couldn’t see the other side of the creek 20’ away. It lasted about 20 minutes, and then the sun came out. We fished until we saw another wave heading our way about an hour later. We weren’t sticking around for that one.
We ran back in to the landing at dead low. I am extremely impressed with the Sterling’s ability to run shallow after that run! I must have been in 4-6" of water at points coming in, and she never slowed down!
So anyway, we got skunked except for filling up the live well with mullet again.
Water temp was 67-68 degrees everywhere and supe
