Bushy Park 4/6

My middle brother asked me on Wednesday if I would please take him fishing today. I said “Of course I’ll take you fishing! Fishing and family are two of my favorite things!”

Well, apparently his vajayjay started hurting, because he canceled on me. I’m not one to let a day of fishing get away, so I went out solo.

I put the boat in around 11:00 AM and headed out to a new spot. Another member on here said Yellow House is his spot, so being adventurous and a hunter in nature I was excited to find a new place. What I found were lots of minnows and mullet all around me and a couple hungry fish chasing them around.

My first tagged redfish! This is supper tonight. It’s been a while since I’ve caught one in the slot! Anyone recognize their tag?

I lost another red as I was fighting with this blue. The hook came out of its mouth right next to the boat. If only I had someone else fishing with me! For a second I thought “bonnethead?” Once it got closer I could see those whiskers and knew exactly what was on the hook. This will be supper for two nights this week!

The water temperature is steadily coming up, and the fishing is only going to get better. The temp in the main river was 59 degrees and got up to 62 in the creek!

It started getting really rough and windy when I headed in around 2. I got really wet when I made the turn toward the landing. The waves had to be 3’ and were probably the biggest whitecaps I’ve crashed through yet out there. Some people were just heading out, and I figured they must be hard up for some fishing time to be doing that. I warned a couple guys about it, but they didn’t seem too worried. Maybe they know something I don’t.

I’ll be back out there tomorrow with a more serious partner who won’t s

I don’t know if anyone will publicly admit to that tag given that it is not in the correct spot and worst of all in the belly

That doesn’t look like one of the newer recreational tags. Good job Hoof

Good job, Hoof. The guy who “owns” Yellow House must be a very wealthy man. Waterfront property is very expensive, so imagine how much the water costs…

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

That is a DNR tag…they use orange ones and tag fish in the belly.

Saltfisher is right, that’s a DNR tag, and by the looks of the sore (possible infection?) around the tag, this fish hasn’t been tagged for too awful long. I can’t fathom why they’d poke it through the abdominal cavity, that’s one risky method. Tossing it in between the spines beneath the skin at the dorsal is a much safer practice.

Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.

that is a dnr tag. They tag them in the belly when the fish are under 14 inches or something like that.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything but in the future i would probably release a tagged redfish if you catch another just so that dnr can gather as much data as possible. I hope you called in the tag too.

lol… nice post! Yellow House is a big spot that’s for sure. Anyway, I’ll prolly see you out there tomorrow… gonna drag my father in law out.

It’s 2 10’ sections of 1 1/4" PVC with a 10’ section of 1" PVC cemented into the middle of it. 5’ of it in one side and 5’ of it in the other side to make the center more rigid. We drilled holes just big enough to get the straw on a Great Stuff foam can every 2’ and filled the whole thing top to bottom with foam. I sealed up the foam holes with silicone RTV just to make sure no water would get inside. I put a cap on one end and a T on the other to make kind of a “duck foot”. I spray painted it with Rustoleum plastic paint on the advice that the UV rays from the sun would deteriorate it, but I really wish I hadn’t done that, because every time it rubs on anything on the boat it gets blue paint on it. I put black electric tape on the places where it was rubbing on the boat when stowed in the push pole clips, and eventually I’ll probably wrap the whole thing in tape.
Total cost (not including that crappy paint or the tape to cover the paint) was about $25.

Here’s the duck foot end, which works really well in the deep, soft mud around Bushy Park:

The capped other end:

I thought I had taken pictures when we were putting it together, but the last time I looked, I couldn’t find them. I’ll try to find them again this afternoon.

If you’re poling from a platform or in more than 3’ of water, you are going to want at least a 20’ pole. You can go shorter if you don’t have a platform. If you don’t have a platform, poling from the bow is probably going to be easier than trying to work around the motor.

I recommend practicing in water that is not moving. Also practice in a place where if you make a wrong move you won’t crunch your hull into a bunch of oysters. I spun around in circles over and over the first time I tried it. Poling is super stealthy and fun, and you can sneak right up on fish.

Good luck and have fun!

yea the only tagged fish i’ve caught was an orange DNR tag in the belly just like that! had so much mold built up on it i could barely read the digits…looks like u had a great weekend tho

I should have taken a picture of that tag after I removed it. There was so much nasty bacteria and funk on it that I had to wash it and my hands immediately afterward. I don’t think it’s a very effective method for tagging and not hurting the fish, but I’m no biologist.

The infected tag didn’t hurt the meat, and Mrs HoofArded fried it and some chicken coated in panko bread crumbs. Woo-wee was that good!

Thanks hoof. Looks great for a $25 pole. I may just do that. I was thinking about PVC ten filling with that spray foam. Glad to know it works.
Also looks good on your key west. I just have a Jon Boat so not worried about the oysters. But thanxs
