Bushy Park 5/11

I hit the water as the sun was rising this morning.

We ran to my latest spot in a creek off of the river, but couldn’t buy a bite. So we packed it up and headed out to the bigger water on the main river. We fished in a bend and I pulled this 25 1/2 incher out. It hit a Gold Bomber Who Dat spoon.

I hooked another one just like it a few minutes later, but it broke me off right next to the boat. I switched up to a gold buzzer spoon and got hung up on something big on the bottom. Spoon #2 gone. So I pulled out my last remaining gold spoon, a Wind Rider. A few casts later, I hooked this 15 1/2 incher.

So that was it. We ran out of time and had to run home after that last fish. It was the gold spoon show today. The fish didn’t want live or cut bait today, but they crushed a couple spoons.

Water temp was 69-70 degrees everywhere. The water was still somewhat murky and pretty stained in places.

Edit: Added water temp and clarity.

Was going to hit the water at Bushy today too but had company coming in town, maybe later. Looks like a fun trip for ya even if it was short.

Good job, Hoofman. Pardon my ignorance, but what’s the difference between the two spoons? I always figured that, aside from size, one gold spoon was the same as the next. Do you favor one over the rest? Thanks in advance.

He will explain it better regarding the one’s he was using, but some spoons, like Kastmasters, are far thicker, shaped like a flat oval, and usually have a treble hook and maybe a maribou/bucktail skirt on the treble. Some, like the Johnson, are much thinner and more concave, with a single J-hook and maybe a weedless prong. The Hopkins Shorty is somewhere in-between and a very good “all purpose” spoon.

So long as they are gold

I suggest you use a swivel along with a good stout 20-25lb leader, every spoon I’ve had tended to kink/twist up my line.

The Who Dat is my favorite, and the Wind Rider is the cheapest. I add a split ring and a swivel to keep them from twisting line.

HoofArded, great report. (sidebar: Hey, who were you with in the Corps? love the silkies by the way… I still have mine and my wife keeps trying to throw them away)

Shamrock, I was with MALS-12 99-00 and MALS-31 from 00-03. I went out on the Roosevelt a week after 9-11 with VMFA-251 where we proceeded to turn Afghanistan into Swiss cheese.

That’s not me in my avatar gif. I do still have my PT shorts, but I don’t wear them anymore. They’re way to small now that I’m a fat and nasty civilian.

Hoof. Good report. I’ve been meaning to try some spoons. Never really have before and now this will motivate me to try. Thanks

Op, the Who Dat spinner spoon is really great and the two reds I hooked on it absolutely hammered it! When I’m reeling it back to me, I look for it in the water. When I see it coming up, I’ll kill it and let it flutter back down to the bottom, then when it stops sinking I’ll start my retrieve again. It spins and wobbles really well when reeling slow. I also ran it through a lot of grass before we moved to the spot where I caught fish, and it performed very well even when I killed it and let it fall down into the grass.

That said, the Wind Rider is way cheaper and was hit just as hard, but by a smaller fish. It’s not at all weedless though.

That Who Dat looks pretty sweet. Do you know any place local that carries them?

No, but I haven’t looked for them locally. I saw it in a Bass Pro catalog and ordered it that day. I found the gold one on Amazon for a dollar cheaper and free shipping (if your order is over $25). If you see it somewhere, I’d like to know.
