Bushy Park 7/18

It’s been a while since I took my middle brother fishing. We grew up fishing almost every weekend with our dad. These days he works too much and fishes too little, but he expressed interest in a school-night fishing trip. Well I’m not one to pass up fishing, so we rolled out at 5:30 PM heading to the landing. We launched and were heading to a spot by 6.

Got to an old faithful creek that I usually fish by kayak and started throwing spinner baits. We trolled around throwing those for about an hour. I looked toward the sun and said, “The sun is right. It’s topwater time.”

We worked a little further up the creek throwing spooks. We got a few good hits, and I thought we were in the fish. Next thing I know it has all turned off in that spot. I cranked up the big motor and went around a few corners to a spot I knew would produce with the time of day and tide.

My first few casts at the next spot were getting smacked, and there were minnows jumping out of the water trying to get away from the trout all around us. Our spooks were getting sucked under and slapped out of the water on every cast. I managed to land two. One was my first inshore fish on topwater. The other was a personal best 20 incher.

We both got a couple to the boat before the hooks came out. I was really hoping and cheering for my brother to land one. I’m glad he got to experience the thrill of watching a fish chasing and slapping on a topwater lure. We had a really great time. My brother told me our trip went way too fast. I agree.

" Some were released before getting them in the boat."

What a great line. I got a good chuckle out of it.

this thread is already full of one-liners and pro tips!

there is nothing like a trout head butting a lure hard enough to come out of the water with it 4x, then coming tight on the 5th hit… AND there’s also nothing like the toilet-flushing, almost certain hookup on an overslot red when he commits too.

i imagine the latter is not unlike what opti so sensually describes… but my personal best trout was big enough for his to eat whole, so i continue my quest one dog-walking evening at a time…

Nice report Hoof! Im ready to get in some fishing myself…been so busy lately!

Not to hijack this thread, but I hooked a 3+ lb (guessing) ladyfish last night at dusk and talk about poor mans tarpon! Once jumped 4 feet out of the water. Also stole my skitter walk :frowning::slight_smile:

My buddy hooked a huge ladyfish a couple weeks ago north of the landing at Bushy Park. He thought it was a small tarpon until I showed him a picture of a ladyfish. They are a really fun fight. His spit the hook before we could land it. It must have jumped completely out of the water a half dozen times.
