As usual, I’ve been busy. It seems like I always have too much to do, other than fishing, this time of year. Well we made our minds up that we were going last nigh, and we went.
We launched at about 6:30, went to the bait spot, and made bait fast. We ran to the fishing spot, started trolling and throwing artificials. I started off throwing a spinner bait, but quickly switched to my top water spook when I realized the days had shortened since the last time I went fishing. My friend was throwing his trusty Z-man paddler on a trigger hook. I think he was throwing the smokey shad color. We also had the “passive rods” on the back in rod holders. Two had live menhaden and finger mullet under corks. A third rod had a mullet on a Carolina rig on the bottom.
We got the skunk off the boat with a small channel cat eating my live menhaden under the cork. Then my buddy got a bass on his Z-man paddler. Next up a big red swallowed my top water plug right at the bow of the boat. It was a crazy loud POW!, and I’ll admit that it made me jump! “That’s what I came here for!”, I exclaimed when I got it in the boat. I can’t really describe how happy I was after that experience. I told my buddy that it felt almost like a religious experience. I have hooked up with a couple reds on top water, but that was the first I’ve landed on top water. Right after that, we went right around a bend, and my buddy hooked up with a big red on his Z-man paddler.
What a great night! After that it started getting dark, so we celebrated with a couple beers and ran the trolling motor back to the river while talking about our fish.
All fish were released healthy.
Water temp was 80 degrees.
