I went fishing with my buddy today on his new-to-him boat. He scouted out a couple of new spots and we went out today to fish them. We launched at around 7-ish this morning. We ran to the first new spot and tried some topwater, but no fish wanted anything to do with that approach. I switched to a DOA shrimp under a cracking bobber and caught a trout pretty quickly. After the first trout, nothing would touch the DOA shrimp, so I switched it out for a new penny Gulp shrimp and got a pretty consistent bite for about an hour. After the Gulp quit working, I broke out the mud minnows and it was on. The mud minnow and chicken on a chain paddler ended up being the baits of the day. We netted some menhaden, but I guess since they are so thick in the creeks right now no fish wanted to touch them.
My buddy ended the day with a slam. I hooked up with two flounder, but pulled the hooks on both of them before I could get them to the boat. Today was the best day we’ve had fishing in 2013. I think we caught and released about 20 fish total. We didn’t catch a lot of keepers, but we were worn out by 2:00!
I’ll be back out there tomorrow in the Sterling. If you see me, say “Hi!”
Water temp was between 65-70 all day.
