Bushy Park 9/9

I took my son fishing yesterday. We were after whatever would bite. What was biting were crabs mostly, but we caught one 12 lb cat and a 3 lb cat as well. On the way out of the creek, I tossed my topwater spook up into a feeder creek that I know always holds a red or two and it got slammed on the first twitch. It was a big red, and he ran straight into the thick grass and kept burying his head until my hooks pulled. If we hadn’t already had supper in the cooler, I would have been pretty mad, but I just turned around and told my son that he whooped my butt in fishing that day.

Both cats were caught on mud minnows under corks.

I am one proud papa today!

After we got home he told Mama Bear that fishing with Daddy is his favorite thing to do.

Good deal! Little man looks stoked! I think the reds are closer to the saltier water right now…cats are all I have caught up in there lately

We went last weekend too, and all we got were two cats and a largemouth bass.

My son doesn’t care as long as he’s catching fish, and if he’s happy, I’m happy.

You have something really good started there. I started the same way with my son many years ago. He is 38 now and we still fish together! Great report.

Nothing better than seeing the smile on a little dude’s (or dudette’s) face while out fishing.

Hey do you have any other pictures of this fish? it is very odd looking. it doesnt look like your typical channel cat, more like a white cat with that big head. if thats the 12 lber would have been a new state record. hard to tell if its the 3 or 12 lber with a young kid for comparison.

Good job, Hoof. Your posts and pics of you and your son’s adventures are awesome.

Now this is a good lesson on how to raise your kid. Don’t think you can start at 15. If you ain’t doing it when they are 5, then it will be baggy pants at 15.

I have the big one in my fridge. I’ll take some more pics before I clean it this afternoon. It’s in a bucket of water, so it might still be alive.

I did notice that the smaller one had a wider mouth than the blues I’m used to. I was thinking bullhead or blue, but it seemed to be too big to be a bullhead.

Here you go.

It seems he lost a little weight. I swear it pooped out a half pound in the live well.

I talked to Scott Lamprecht from SCDNR and emailed him the pictures, and he confirmed that it is a blue. So no record book entry for us yet, but we’ll keep trying.

I was excited about a possible record, but now I’m excited about a catfish supper! :stuck_out_tongue:

Excellent day’s catch Hoof!!

I’m taking a retired friend of mine out to bushy here soon for the same sort of mix that you are after (reds and cats, and misc whatever).

Hopefully I can put him on some action out there. He’s been really down lately because of some horrible family mess going on, so I have him coming down from the upstate… if the cats/reds don’t bite, maybe the crappie or bass will at the reservoir

Yea that one is definitely a blue cat. I was talking about the last pic in your first post, the one with your son holding the boga grips. That fish is def not a blue cat, but that was prolly the 3 pounder and wouldn’t be a record. Scott is a good biologist and can prolly ID the other fish.

You son will no doubt remember this for a while.
I still remember catching catfish and crappie with my dad when i was young. I never let my pants sag and still fish today. Dad must have done something right.

10% of the people catch 90% of the fish.

I see what Bioguy is talking about. The anal fin on the smaller catfish is not the right shape to be a blue cat, but the rest of it doesn’t really look like a channel cat. Either way, good eating.

It is so fulfilling to see a little one so happy catching a fish! He very well may tell of that day to his kids and then perpetuate the fishing bug in countless other kids.Good post!
