Bushy Park dredging - long read

I have followed the ramp conditions at Bushy Park since it was built in 1989 and had been a vocal fisherman about the declining conditions with tide depth for years. Now that Berkeley County has agreed it is a problem, Why does it need two years worth of studies before work can begin. They have a disposal area, they know it needs to be done, they know the major cause of the silting and they know people are upset at having a limited use boat access to the Cooper River. There is no environmental impact on restoring something to its original condition. The impact is what it is now. If you are a Resident of Berkeley and a boater or user of this ramp, please contact your Representative and urge faster action on this matter. More voices can make a difference.
Thanks.

Typical government. They will probably pay some ridiculous fee to some “consultant” to study the feasibility of dredging.

Well, I suspect part of the problem is how do you keep it from happening again? That will take some study if done right.

They should get the dredge that’s dredging the BP Slip in the creek to dig out Bushy park.

Never hurts to voice your opinion to the representatives but good luck.

You can thank all of the environmental agencies out there for the amount of time it takes just to get a job like this permitted. It’s not just a matter of “hey you are dredging next door, why not hop on down and dredge Bushy”. It just does not work like that. Due to EPA and other state regulations you have to analyze the sediment, test for contaminants, determine where to put the material, get permission from the Corps to use a containment cell, or truck it out if it is really contaminated, determine the dredge volume… And on top of all of that, the feasibility study will be used to determine if Berkeley County wants to pony up the money after all of this. All of this takes time.
