Well it was bound to happen. Didn’t catch a single fish on the hook. It was something I kinda expected when I got a good hard hit on my first cast, then nothing until about 12:00 and I got another good hit, and brought it halfway in and it came off.
The water’s salinity seemed to be way down. It was more clear than usual, and I tested the salinity with my hydrometer (water I brought home in bait bucket), and it was 1.008 (seawater full strength is usually 1.026, Bushy Park is brackish so it varies). I don’t know what “normal” would be for Bushy, but I do know that this is a really low salinity. Other folks I chatted with were also having a hard time finding anything in any numbers also. Perhaps the low salinity from recent rains has pushed the marine life a little further down.
Either way, we had a lot of fun. Wind started giving us a fit in the canoe, partly because I donated my anchor (an old brake disc!) to the bottom of the river. Apparently that one long rope that was attached to my anchor (and, tied to the thwart) was actually two shorter ropes. Guess which rope wasn’t attached? Was in deeper water than usual this time and the rope (cheap nylon) sank, and I couldn’t find it lol.
So I packed up and left. I did bring home 3 bighead sea robins (1.5" long) that I caught in my cast net while looking for shrimp/mullet. I’ll keep them in my saltwater aquarium for a while, they should make interesting critters for pets.
