Went out again today with my son and my friend Craig (Transplanted 10ECN). He brought his boat, one of those nice mini-pontoon types that you can toss in the back of a truck. Putted around in his trolling motor, slinging various jigs.
Managed to catch maybe 6-8 undersized trout, and took home two keeper trout, and three keeper reds (one was 15 1/4", one was 21", and one was 22 3/4"… meaning two of them were very close to being under/over the slot).
The bigger red is literally the largest slot red I’ve ever taken. Usually they are either 13" long, or 30+" long lol.
My son caught several sea trout, including one of the ones we brought home (live shrimp).
This kid is not even 4 years old yet and can throw a spinning reel pretty far. He wouldn’t know how to throw a pushbutton spincaster if he had to, he’s never touched one. He lacks a bit in the accuracy department (obviously), and in the “don’t whack Craig in the head” department, and I casted most of his casts today, but man is he learning fast.

I’m pretty sure Isaac has the “Don’t smack Craig in the head” down pat… it’s the “Don’t smack Dad in the head” that he needs to work on.
He’s got the makings of a fine fisherman!
I’m glad you two had a good time, even IF he did almost outfish us.
I broke off two very nice ones, and I would’ve had a stringer of 10-12" trout!
Wow!!! Thats Awesome! Having you son out fishing is one of the best moments in life. He’s hooked for life. Great report.
Cheers

Lol, YOU might have a stringer of 10-12" trout, but all mine would be over 14". When I catch them smaller than that, I throw the evidence back in the water
BTW got all the keepers we caught filleted up. I have a 48X24 sheet of inch-thick Starboard plastic that I use as a cutting table, works fantastic. I prop it up on my biggest cooler, and I sit on a smaller cooler, in the shade, and fillet them. Can’t wait to blacken them tomorrow in the pan
i just HAAAAAAAD to go hunting this morning and hear turkeys instead of shoot deer and boar didnt i? looks like a good day and he may have dont smack craig in the head down but still needs to work on dont hit dave in the head
did he leave his line in the water more than 30 seconds too? tried on base for a few casts and watched a TT get bitten in half by either a trout or blue right below me and ended up getting a lizardfish lol. i plan on netting some live shrimp and mullet so tomorrow morning will be a much more serious outing on base for me though

Lol, nice lizard!
Menhaden are ALL-OVER the place at Bushy. Go at high tide and throw at random off the pier there. Unfortunately they don’t seem to make good bait in the places we try, so I netted up around a good 100 of them and froze them for catfish bait.
ive pulled up many, many trout and flounder under corks or by pier posts on base…if ya keep em aalive they aint bad!
Your best catch of the day was your fishing rod after Isaac hooked it and cast it overboard, though…
LMAO!!! yup i can definately see issac doin that!!! i hope one of the next canoe trips im on i get to see issac play a red even though i will likely be smackd in the face by his rod. THAT would make his day!

Lol yeah. But that was actually Isaac’s catch, it was only his jig hook that was holding it from the abysmal depths of Bushy Park (all 8 inches of it). Of course there was also when I knocked my own water thermos overboard and we had to double back so I can net it with my new nifty fold-up net.
Seriously though folks, today was a real blessing. Nice weather (kinda toasty), caught some fun fish, brought home some good eats, and my family is going bonkers over the pics (same ones above).
Those pictures are absolutely wonderful…had me grinning ear to ear…I esp like the one where he is laying down and it looks like the fish are talking to him…I know they are dead…but it is sooo darn cute! And in the one the eyes on. His shirt look like they are peeping over the fish! Cute-cute-cute! Thanks so much for the biggest smile I’ve had today!

Sea Squirt 16
as promised i did better this time…but not before shredding my cast net beyond repair on a new log that fell in the water
started with a baitfish colored jig and within 3 casts i slung up an 18" flattie. cast it around more with nothing else so out comes the TT. i see a redfish chasin stuff around, cast towards it, and pull in a 16" flounder instead. next cast ZZZZZZZZZZZ then oh *$#(%!@ as it finds an oyster bed and pops the line. looked to be about a 20" red, but definately in the slot. put on another TT and miss another flounder and get numerous TTs shredded by the bluefish mafia. move around a bit and find a 14" trout that goes in the bucket with the flounder. bluefish mafia found my new spot, murdered a few more TTs, then i was down to 1 TT so put on a smaller jig and worked it like a TT. got a strong hit that felt like a red but missed it, then caught a needlefish and a baby sea bass to finish the morning. should have had a slam, but bought home a trout and 2 flounder.

Sounds like a fun day.
Needlefish aren’t too easy to hook, that took some skill lol.
i hook a needlefish and a tiny sea bass, but miss the big mouth on another red or big trout that slammed that 3" jig but missed it when i set…figure that 1 out!
I’m not sure that is an actual black sea bass, isn’t there a smaller sea bass variety that has no size limit?
