Went out yesterday with cm. First trip in my new ws tarpon 120. Sat in traffic for an hour, but arrived to a beautiful day on the water. paddled out and first cast hooked a 15" spottail. Two minutes later c.m. answered with a flounder to go with the trout he landed before I arrived. fished all day. The trout bite was on! boated six keepers. Then had a hit, and drag was a peelin’- what a beautiful sound! We just knew it was a nice spottail. After a long fight, and a less than graceful net job, by yours truly, It was the largest trout we had ever seen caught! A 24 incher, Had it weighed at anglers- 4 pounds 11 ounces and I’m mailing out the trident card today! CM, thanks for a great day. We’ll have to do it again reel soon. <{{>< p.s. pictures to follow for all you nonbelievers!
c red, I am planning on a couple of mental health days down in Chucktown Nov 9th through 13th. I was trying to decide about bring my yaks (wife and I both have T120s) but was not sure if it would be to cold or not. I know it deponds upon the particular day and clothing but what kind of day was it down there and what kind of clothing were you in. Waders and dry top, shorts and tee, sunny no wind, blustery??? Please give me some feed back as we are both new to this and not sure of limits.
highlander,
It was 40’s in the a.m. so I wore goretex over my pants. by noon it was tee shirt weather. It’s hard to say this time of year, but the key is to stay dry so if you have dry wear I would recommend it, and lots of layers. take care <{{><
CR, that is awesome. I’m a believer, trust me. Always up to checking out the happy snaps. Did you have your yak tied off or anchored or did the red give you a ride? What were you using for bait on the trout/reds? Good job!. v/r tf
tx,
I was anchored. but the red and the trout sure did have my reel screemin’. All fish were caught on mud minnows either on a float or on the bottom.
Cut mullet, It looks like dad and I are going to meet mon. morning at huntington beach state park for two days of yak fishing and a night of camping. Does anyone have any fishing experience at H.B. state park in myrtle beach??
Hey CR, that’s awesome. What weight of anchor are you using? Still need to add that item to my loadout. Sounds like you have a good fishing op in the making. Good luck with that. I’m hoping to do a Capers Island overnighter and fish the inlets and maybe off shore sometime in the future. In the meantime, I’ll be happy to yak the back waters. v/r tf
Got those pics developed, wish it was Me instead of you! We also caught 25-30 u/s trout, 5-10 ladyfish, catfish. Glad I was there to witness the gator. Anytime you need a paddlin partner, I’m there. Don’t forget your landing-net:smiley:.
tx,
I use a small folding boat anchor. It’s a bit bulky but it grips better than the little kayak anchor.
CM,
I had a blast. Can’t wait to do it again soon. Are the pics on cd? <{{>< p.s. I thank god you had your net!!!
check your email and the photo page. Dang, you look happy!
highlander,
m’not a yaker, aside from cm talkin’ me into some awsome scenery and peaceful places, but the weather around here may hit 80’deg anyday of the year! But like he said, mornings are usually jacket like and afternoons are t-shirt and the best in the world.
cutmullet will put ya on some fish in a yak!

Hey Carolina Red,
I just returned from Huntington Beach State Park. My wife and I stayed there Friday and Saturday Nights. She loves to camp. I can’t figure out why, but I have to keep the peace somehow. I did not take my boat or my yak. There were a great many people fishing. The man at the bait store said it was due to the Spot run. I’ve never fished there, but it looks like fun, but very crowded on weekends. Let me know how you do.
Good luck,
TheHawg
Hey Cred or any other Chucktown yakers, a little more about your colder weather dress and other things. Are you wearing waders and not worrying about water through your scupper holes or are you plugging the scuppers? Can you give me an idea what the water temps are like back in the creeks this time of year. I’m still trying to decide about bringing the yaks with us. We will be down that way around the 9th - 13th. Anybody interested in hooking up with my wife and I for some paddleing and fishing? If so send me and E and we can talk about meeting up some where. We are somewhat familiar with the area but not sure of access points other than Shem Creek and off the side of the road at the old Pitts Street bridge.
I finally have the yaks pretty well rigged for fishing. The last thing I need is an anchor. Do you have any recomendation on weight. I have some 5lb lead ingots that I thought about drilling a hole and mounting and eye bolt, do think it will be enough weight? I have crates for both yaks that have pvc rod holders attached plus two adjustable rod holders off to the side for trolling a bait while paddleing. The depthfinder and gps are mounted on my yak and ready to go powered by 8AA gives me about 8hrs of juice. Most of our water time so far has been here in the upsate on Lake Joccasse, but one of the main reason we bought them was for taking to the beach for fishing and enjoying/exploring the backwaters of the marsh areas, just not sure if we should wait for next spring and warmer conditions.
