me and the boys out again today, fished pop-r,worms,rattle trap but the bait of choice for us today was spinner bait and frog. we missed a few on the frog and jesse lost one spinner bait to the stinking mudfish i had put some heavy braid on and kept the same spinner all day. this is the first time i have fished with braid and man the bite is different!!! its like POW and feels like a 10 pounder bite.
all fish released to fight again
jesse with his two
michael with his off the frog
and man look at the belly on this one lol
what kind of frog? we killed em yesterday in our 15 acre pond using rage tail frogs hooked weedless. just kept on the top… nice fish! looks like yall had fun!
same frog. rage, kinda green swirl white on top and mostly white on bottom. what hook do you use i have been using a wide gap 5/0, and we seem to miss most of the fish, maybe to the reaction jerk to the blow up but after a few time we do settle down and let them take it with better results but we still miss some.
Try pulling the hook point and the barb all the way through the frog and then skin hook it on the top. That’ll improve your hook sets. 5/0 should be plenty of hook.

cchappy21…thanks for the hooking tip. I love fishing the frogs/toads, but feel like I am doing well to hook up 50% of the blow ups. I give the skin hooking a try.
Agreed, skin hooking it helps. Also, hopefully you’re using braid with the frog. It helps with the hookups due to lack of stretch.
The best hook I’ve found is a Mustad wide gap 5/0 30-degree jig hook with a coil screw in keeper. It’s basically the same hook that Zoom packages as a frog hook, but it’s better. You can bulk order some from Stamina, along with the keepers, and come out cheaper.
Here’s the hook, you can find the keepers on the same website…

thanks for the tips guys, i do “skin hook” my frogs like cc talked about. went out after work today solo, only managed two small bass. i think my biggest problem is not letting them have it before i set the hook. today i let them have it much longer than i normaly do like proly 5 - 6 sec, let them have a little slack till i see the line move and pop. i’m just wondering if its the smaller fish that i miss and makes me worry that a big one will spit it before i get a chance to set the hook. i guess that comes with time. missing fish is better than no bites at all which i have done plenty of.

If you’re missing a lot of fish, then most likely it’s one of two things.

You’re getting hits from small ones, and they may only have the legs of the frog in their mouth.
-
Sometimes if they hit a bait but don’t totally commit to it, you may need to change color. That makes a difference with crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or soft plastics…they may half heartedly hit what you’re throwing, but they’ll drill a different color. Any time I’m getting hits but not hooking them, I switch to the same bait in a different color.
Use braid, and be sure you’re using a sharp hook.
I use 20# fireline (black) and skin hook. With fireline you can feel the smallest nibble and get prepared rather “react” and jerk too hard. Also with fireline or braided you don’t need to jerk as hard, it doesn’t really stretch at all. For some reason, I have been getting more action with bright red hooks, I sometimes let them sink and little and sort of “finesse” to make em look like they are dying. Sorry I took so long to reply. Those rage tails are the best.
